he first obstacle is everything Americans are learning about DSA is coming through the lens of the dominant media; or what Rush Limbaugh often called “the drive-by media.” Largely absent from the discussion is any balanced media source, despite the almost universal use of the term “mainstream media” to describe the current collection of highly partisan and politically slanted journalists from whom most Americans get much of their news. While “mainstream” may imply these sources are balanced and informative, most of them are of course, really neither.
The second obstacle to any honest discussion is an assumption by advocates the DSA is simply against a “capitalist” system they associate with greed and “unfairness.” They favor instead what they claim & consider a benign, compassionate “socialist” economy where everything is largely free. And who doesn’t like free stuff? However, capitalism is not the real villain here. Without capital (funding), there would be no economy at all, free or state-run. The only alternative would be to return to a barter system. I’ll paint your apartment if you give me wood to heat my house.
Therefore, the fundamental issue of democratic socialism is not between capitalism and socialism. It’s between free enterprise and economic liberty on the one hand and a state-run, centrally managed, often totalitarian, market system on the other.
Capitalism has not always been synonymous with free enterprise or economic liberty. The 1776 economic manifesto The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith never used the word “capitalism.” It was Karl Marx who first used “capitalism” as a highly pejorative description of the economies of the affluent West. North Korea and Cuba also utilize capital; and both are, in their own way, forms of state capitalism. That’s a nice way of saying the state has all the money and the citizens are oppressed serfs. The state may provide for them to an extent, but is careful to do so as little as possible.
Because a socialist or communist state’s first concern is not to deliver services; but to reduce costs to retain and preserve “capital” for its ruling elite. The first casualty of this kind of economic system invariably ends up being quality. Healthcare is free; but only if you can wait months for an operation, and you qualify for it under the state’s cost-cutting rationing of medical resources. If you are considered too old, sick, or medically compromised in any other way, someone younger and healthier will be selected as being more worthy of the scarcity of care managed by the state.
Housing might be free, but who guarantees there will be sufficient heat in winter, clean running water, garbage collection, working elevators or pest control?
Under communism there is no private property allowed; all land belongs only to the state. Price is immaterial. Just ask the “kulaks,” peasant farmers in Ukraine, whose land and grain were stolen by Stalin’s Soviet Union during the Holodomor in 1932-33. Five million of them starved to death.
Oddly, DSA candidates do not consider nor describe themselves as being communists, regardless of the fact most DSA platform policies are blatantly communist. That’s because they would never win any elections if they did.
- Collective state ownership of the key economic drivers which dominate individual life, such as energy production and transportation…”
- Nationalization and socialize institutions of monetary policy, insurance, real estate, and finance…”
- Social housing implemented through a redistribution of land from property owners. In other words, social housing must expropriate property from capitalists in order to deliver it to the working class…”
DSA members, are nevertheless the perfect stooges for communism. No more than willing dupes and “useful idiots,” of our global communist enemies. In the 1930’s,Walter Duranty of the New York Times wrote from the Soviet Union there was “no actual starvation or deaths from starvation” in Ukraine and “there is no famine. Shamefully, Duranty was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1932 for his communist propaganda. An award which remains unrevoked, despite him having been proven completely dishonest by History.
Unlike the DSA, communist leaders such as Lenin, Mao & Castro did not aspire to completely abolish their police, military or border patrol. On the contrary, these totalitarians expanded the police, military and prison system and did not think twice to put millions in prison & the gulags while continuing to expand State power through police and security forces such as the KGB, MININT & MSS. How else could communism succeed in killing more than a quarter of a billion people in the Twentieth Century?
Current communist rulers from Cuba to China would love to see the DSA seize power and abolish the police and border patrol in America. They would completely support DSA policies of opening and emptying all the prisons. They would like nothing more than to watch DSA throw open America’s borders, and shut down our oil and gas production. Yet, no other communist government would ever adopt such ridiculous policies for themselves.
DSA supporters appear to believe mob violence like that used during the summer of 2020 and currently characterized by the assault on immigration law enforcement is a valid vehicle of intimidation which could allow them to seize majority control of the House of Representatives, followed by the Senate and then the Presidency itself. Should the DSA consider the Supreme Court to be a barrier to their totalitarian plans; their next logical step would be to centralize power by abolishing all the government checks and balances provided in the US Constitution to fundamentally transform the US.
The DSA is growing impatient with the world; as they sense their utopia is now at hand and cannot wait. However, an honest and thoughtful discussion of America’s future; or any reasonable analysis of DSA objectives will probably never happen because the drive-by media remains complicit in covering for them.
Commentator Ryan Mauro notes New York City’s DSA Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Alexander Soros are both ardent admirers of Slavoj Žižek, whose In Defence of Lost Causes calls for the Jacobin return of the French Revolution guillotine and what he celebrates as “emancipatory terror.” It seems the DSA objective is really nothing less than the total destruction of the West; to be replaced by a global form of Stalinist communism. In addition to projected multiple trillions of dollars in unsustainable new government spending, the proposed DSA foreign policy agenda is also a nightmare. DSA advocates for a global intifada with widespread Hamas style terrorism, the destruction of Israel, and “defunding” the US War Department..
The empty promises of communism still haunt humanity and have only been repackaged to sell to a new generation of people who have never been taught how to really think for themselves. The DSA is only a Marxist trojan horse, a “stooge” intent on the destruction of America and all which we hold dear. They must never be allowed to succeed. ✪
