VICTOR DAVIS HANSON: NOT WINNING? JUST CHANGE THE RULES

kkk

hat binds the new Democrat Party to the new Democratic Socialists is a set of shared issues and values. That is, the radicalism of the Democrats in the age of Trump Derangement Syndrome; lawfare, de-balloting, the Mar-a-Lago raid, and calls to destroy the Electoral College, the nine-justice Supreme Court, and the filibuster, helped give birth to the socialists.

But the overriding commonality among those on the new Left is that if they do not get their way, they blame the “system.” Then they seek to change the rules, no matter how hallowed those laws and conventions may have been or how much they themselves benefited from them in the past.

When the Left cannot win within the rules, it changes the rules; and when that fails, it changes the people who make them.

When the Left lost the White House, Congress; and for the most part, the Supreme Court, it began clamoring to change the system. For left-wing Democrats, that angst also translated into calls to bring in two new blue states, weaponize the FBI and DOJ, ally with social media to suppress the news, and spy on congressional representatives. All the socialists and communists did was up the ante in destroying norms by calling for the end of the presidency, the Senate, the border, the police, and the Pentagon.

By 2021, it was time to destroy the southern border and welcome in some 10 million illegal immigrants; without audits, English proficiency, health checks, or the ability to support themselves.

Had Kamala Harris been elected in 2024, we would have had another four years and another five million illegal aliens. And perhaps America would have gone from 50 million foreign-born residents to 60 million, or about 18 percent of the population.

In this regard, the Left sees California as our most liberal—and most ideal—state and perhaps concludes that the reason is that 28 percent of its resident population is now foreign-born; with the majority arriving with vast needs for health, education, housing, and food subsidies.

Today, 50 percent of all births in California are paid for by Medi-Cal, which serves 40 percent of the population. When second-generation immigrants are added to the foreign-born population, the two groups together comprise roughly 45 percent of California’s current population. This demographic transformation is one of the most profound in American history and came at a time when traditional civic education stressing assimilation, acculturation, integration, and knowledge of American traditions, history, and values was nearly nonexistent in California public schools.

So one way of achieving radical change was to alter the demography and welcome as many immigrants as possible who, in the first or second generation, might follow the examples of Reps. Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, or Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed. They represent an entirely new sort of immigrant who arrives—or is born to immigrant parents—with both complaints against and dependence on their host country. They can see only the sins of America, never the catastrophes of their homeland that drove them or their parents here. This strange demand to change the rules whenever they do not bode well for angry and aggrieved parties permeates every possible manifestation of the Left, but is especially egregious when demanded by immigrants who came originally as uninvited guests but almost immediately damned their magnanimous host.

It is strange for so many new immigrants to act on an elemental desire to reach America; only on arrival to profess that it is full of toxic, sinful people, living and dead. Yet the damned hosts have inexplicably welcomed total strangers like themselves, and have allowed them to share in the freedom, security, and prosperity created by the dead whom the newcomers nonetheless endlessly slander and smear.

If particular minorities statistically did not do as well on the SAT as Asians and whites did on average, the solution was certainly not SAT tutorials in the inner city or K–12 SAT outreach, demands for tougher classes in grammar, math, and analytics, or a return to the melting pot rather than the current salad-bowl tribalist model.

Instead, after the George Floyd riots, the call went out to abolish the SAT entirely; as if there had never been a purpose behind its creation. In fact, merit-based SAT exams were designed in the 1920s and 1930s to allow anyone, regardless of race, gender, region, or class, to enter college through meritorious performance on the tests; and, in particular, to overcome old-boy insider preferences and regional and ethnic prejudices.

Yet when the SAT was mostly abolished for four or five years, higher education thought it had solved the problem of minority underrepresentation.

In fact, its racialist war on standards only magnified its dilemmas. The SAT had once informed admissions officers not only about applicants’ qualifications but also whether admitted students could do the work once enrolled.

But soon liberal professors learned that many of the newly admitted cohorts lacked the K–12 training necessary to do customary university coursework. Yet if professors maintained their regular courses, requirements, and grading, they might soon be labeled racists once particular minorities were shown to do less well than Asians and whites.

So universities inflated grades. They introduced new remedial and gut courses. And they reduced the required coursework. But again, racialism is never a solution to problems. Instead, it is a catalyst that fuels them; as we have seen with the new notion that plagiarism is not an actionable offense when the culprit can plead victim status, whether a former president of Harvard or a current professor at Cambridge. But there are ancient laws and norms that insist intellectual theft is a crime and should be punished, not rewarded or ignored.

Soon employers noticed that the reading, writing, and analytical skills of graduates from prestigious schools were proving dismal. Alumni complained both that the reputations of their almae matres were in decline and resting on the fumes of the past and that their own children, who had prepared diligently to ensure suitably competitive grades and SAT scores for admission, were being rejected solely on the basis of their race.

The Left likewise pushed for lower physical standards for the military’s ground-combat brigades so that women, on average far less strong than their male counterparts, could join elite units. Again, the same ignorance and arrogance were evident. Physical standards were based on a century of combat experience in which morale, group discipline, and unit success rested on ensuring that all soldiers achieved a common level of physical strength and endurance.

This neo-Marxist-driven demand to mandate equality; albeit now substituting racial and gender consciousness for class consciousness, requires the destruction of established traditions, laws, and norms. The radical Left’s key agendas—defunding the police, destroying the border, granting mass amnesties to illegal aliens, subsidizing wind and solar energy while waging a war on fossil fuels, and expanding racial essentialism in hiring and admissions—have never won more than 30 to 40 percent support among the general public. Yet the solution was not to ask why, and then to reflect, reboot, and recalibrate in order to discover how the Left had lost public support. Instead, the solution was to alter or destroy the system that had denied them power.

So communists, socialists, and radical Democrats prefer moving the goalposts. When equality of opportunity was largely achieved, next they demanded a mandated equality of outcome.

With the ascendancy of a large, affluent middle class, the Left, in its eternal search for a victimized class, pivoted and replaced class oppression with racial victimization.

And when there were not yet enough victimized minorities to guarantee a majority constituency of the aggrieved, the Left redefined the victimized to include anyone who was not a white heterosexual male, regardless of income and privilege.

And when the people finally tired of the Leftists’ totalitarian social engineering, the Left sought to change the system by radically altering the way Americans vote; the manner in which government is formed and functions, and, finally, the very demography of America.

The common denominator? Human nature revolts at forced statism, coercive redistribution, and government-mandated equality of results. It instead yearns for liberty and freedom.

No matter how much deception, camouflage, or brainwashing is employed, statism, socialism, and communism can never sustain public support. Throughout history, the Left has therefore begun by changing the rules and altering the demography; if not initially through changes to election rules, bureaucratic fiat, and biased court orders, then eventually through sheer violence. ✪

VICTOR DAVIS HANSON: WHO’S BEEN DESTROYING THE NORMS?

vvv

ne of the more surreal things about the new Democrat Party is its habit of charging Trump with legal and ethical transgressions that Democrats themselves normalized years ago. The result is a strange sort of projection, in which the Left’s charges often reveal its own prior wrongdoing. And after undermining norms, they now lament the loss of what they destroyed.

Too Cozy an Attorney General? Democrat Senators voted unanimously against Todd Blanche for Attorney General, claiming as a former Trump attorney, he was too close to the President. Really? Even if true, the model came from the Democrats and dates back to John F. Kennedy’s appointment of his own brother, Robert F. Kennedy, as attorney general and Obama Attorney General Eric Holder’s own boast: “I’m still the president’s wingman, so I’m there with my boy.”

Lawfare Worries? Democrats are angry Republican state prosecutors might find grounds under state law to indict Anthony Fauci, despite his Federal pardons for Federal offenses. But again, who popularized that stratagem?

Ask the freelancing left-wing state, county, and municipal prosecutors Fani Willis, Letitia James, and Alvin Bragg. They set the example, even though they had to concoct nonexistent crimes to ensure that, if Jack Smith’s Federal charges did not stick, their local ones might.

A Partisan IRS? Democrats claim Trump has unduly leveraged the IRS. This charge comes from the Left that produced Lois Lerner. She subjected Republican and Tea Party-like groups to special scrutiny, delaying or denying their applications for tax-exempt status during Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign.

Remember, an IRS contractor leaked Trump’s tax returns to The New York Times, which in turn made them public during the 2020 election year.

Election Denialism? The Left claims that Trump is doing great damage to the system by questioning the integrity of the 2020 balloting, which had transmogrified from mostly in-person Election Day voting, with identification required in most states, to widespread early and mail-in balloting, without verifiable identification. But who in modern times first popularized the idea of a presidential candidate challenging election results and alleging ballot fraud?

A New York Times-affiliated audit found, had Al Gore even won his court bid to obtain recounts in the contested counties, the disputed ballots would nonetheless have shown George W. Bush winning Florida. Thus, the Left’s months-long claim Bush was “selected, not elected” was mere election denialism.

The Hillary Clinton campaign and the Obama White House conspired to peddle the fake “Steele dossier,” while James Comey’s FBI sought to destroy Trump. After the election, Democrats from Hillary Clinton to Jimmy Carter labeled Trump an illegitimately elected president.

Would-be Georgia governor Stacey Abrams, who lost the Georgia gubernatorial election by some 50,000 votes, barnstormed the country for more than a year claiming that she was the rightfully elected governor; to Democrat applause. In 2005, Democrats in the House vainly tried to reject George Bush’s victory in Ohio and thereby throw the 2004 election to John Kerry.

A Weaponized FBI? FBI Director Kash Patel has been an object of nonstop liberal scorn, mostly on the grounds that he is too close to Trump and does the White House’s bidding, along with his former subordinate Dan Bongino.

But no one has accused Patel’s FBI of hatching plots against Democrat candidates in the fashion of James Comey’s FBI, which cooked up the bogus “Crossfire Hurricane” and “Oxford Comma” investigations whichcrippled the opening years of the first Trump Administration.

And we should remember that “8647” Comey leaked, through a third party to The New York Times, the contents of memos documenting his conversations with the president. Under oath, he claimed ignorance or amnesia 245 times before a congressional committee.

His interim successor, Andrew McCabe, stepped down after investigators concluded he had lied on four occasions—and he was never charged.

FBI lawyer Kevin Clinesmith doctored an email used in a submission to the FISA court and was convicted of a felony.

McCabe was followed by Christopher Wray, whose FBI conducted the raid on the Trump family’s Mar-a-Lago residence; only to find 102 of the approximately 11,000 documents seized bore classification markings.

No one seemed bothered that at that time Joe Biden had still not disclosed that he had removed classified documents and stored them in unsecured locations for more than 30 years.

Congressional Subpoenas? Democrat Senators grew furious that Anthony Fauci was called to testify before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs about his alleged past lies to Congress and misconduct while serving as the COVID “czar.”

But when Democrats issued subpoenas to former White House officials Steve Bannon and Peter Navarro, and the two stonewalled the committee, they were both jailed for four months.

Domestic Spying? Did Obama not obtain the phone records of Associated Press reporters? His administration also went after the email and phone records of Fox reporter James Rosen. And did Biden Special Counsel Jack Smith not secretly obtain the call logs and text messages of members of Congress?

As a general rule, when the Left levels such accusations, they should be seen as efforts to project its own prior sins onto its opponents. And now, after destroying norms, the Left laments their absence. ✪

JB SHURK: PATRIOTS WON’T LET THE COMMUNISTS TAKE AMERICA

his current chapter in American history could be titled, “The Bad Guys Keep Winning Because They Suffer No Consequences for Their Treachery.”

Islamo-fascists and communists have taken over the Democrat Party and now threaten to take over the U.S. Congress. Neither Barack Obama nor Hillary Clinton has been brought to justice for conspiring with parts of the Intelligence Community to frame President Trump as a Russian spy. The same Ukrainian and British Intelligence agents who helped orchestrate the first ridiculous impeachment against Trump (ostensibly set in motion because the president asked Volodymyr Zelenskyy why Joe Biden’s son was making tens of thousands of dollars each month as a board member of a Ukrainian energy company) continue trying to instigate an all-out war between the Russian Federation and the United States.

The mainstream media and globalist politicians want us all to forget that they used COVID as an excuse to roll out totalitarianism around the planet; justifying widespread censorship, lockdowns, mass surveillance, deadly chemical injections, and the abrogation of God-given rights in the name of “public health.” Our scientific institutions refuse to say clearly that COVID was most likely engineered in a Chinese bio-lab with funding from U.S. taxpayers that Dr. Anthony Fauci had redirected to assist his friends and business associates overseas.

Nobody has been prosecuted for any of these crimes, just as nobody was prosecuted when President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder used the ATF to arm Mexican drug cartels, the IRS to target conservatives, and the USA PATRIOT Act to spy on political enemies (including all the Republican presidential candidates of the 2016 election).

During the Obama and Biden Administrations, Christians were prosecuted for being faithful servants of Christ. Parents were put on domestic terror watchlists for objecting to radical infusions of “transgenderism,” pornography, and race-based discrimination in their children’s public school curricula. \

The Democrat Party nationalized healthcare, used USAID budgets to subvert foreign elections, and redirected trillions of taxpayer dollars into “climate change” slush funds for domestic and foreign political allies. The Obama-Biden regime defamed police officers as inherently racist and disparaged all white Americans as inherently “privileged.” Decades of solid improvement in race relations in the United States were thrown out the window, as Democrats told their voters that white, heterosexual males deserve to be vilified and attacked.

For fifteen years, Antifa goons, BLM rioters, Islamic supremacists, and other violent left-wingers have burned down neighborhoods, destroyed churches, looted businesses, terrorized motorists, and harassed, threatened, and murdered ideological adversaries. Instead of reporting on years of leftist domestic terrorism, corporate news talking heads still pretend that President Trump’s MAGA voters are the biggest threat to the United States.

It is easy to list the long train of abuses that have been committed against us and lose hope for the future. Particularly because nobody has been held accountable for any of the serious crimes listed above, a lot of American patriots have begun to wonder whether our country can even be saved. It can be saved; however, doing so will require Americans to get their minds right about the struggles ahead.

I often ask American patriots who express premature defeat whether they would give up so easily if this were 1776, rather than 2026. My point is two-fold: First, we are most definitely living through a critical period of American history when, just as was true during the time of our Founding Fathers, the fate of our country rests in our hands. Second, the odds that we shall succeed in saving America today are at least as high as they were two-hundred-fifty years ago.

Sometimes the people who are most proud of America’s past accomplishments are too quick to throw in the towel when it comes to America’s future. But the origin story of the United States is epic because it was so unlikely. The Boston Massacre was in 1770. The Boston Tea Party occurred three years later. By the time the Second Continental Congress declared Independence from Great Britain in 1776, American colonists were still sharply divided over the merits of war. The Revolutionary War continued until ’83. The Articles of Confederation, ratified in ’81, was superseded by ’89. When the Founders drafted the U.S. Constitution, they effectively tabled the peculiar institution of slavery, knowing that the issue would collapse the Union. During the 1790s, the heavily indebted United States endured severe economic troubles, and many members of Great Britain’s Parliament expected to reacquire their former colonies just as soon as interstate squabbles and economic calamity doomed the young nation. When the British captured and burned much of Washington, D.C., in 1814, they nearly succeeded.

When Sam Adams and the Sons of Liberty began meeting at the Green Dragon Tavern in 1765, do you think they knew it would take fifty more years to secure America’s Independence for posterity? Do you think John Hancock, Paul Revere, or any of the Bostonians who met around the “Liberty Tree” would have cared? Their preserved correspondence to other patriots throughout the colonies reveals two things above all else: (1) They knew that they were the underdogs, and (2) they relished the fight. They leaned into their political and moral principles. They defended their convictions. They embraced righteous indignation.  “With a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence,” the signers of the Declaration of Independence “mutually pledged to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.”

Those extraordinary men risked absolutely everything to go up against the greatest empire in the world. Few outside of the American colonies believed they would prevail. A healthy contingent of British elites predicted that the colonies-turned-states would fight among themselves and dissolve the Union within a short number of years. Some Americans with Loyalist sympathies continued to expect a return of British rule until the conclusion of the War of 1812 seemed to finally put the matter to bed.

I do not expect today’s American patriots to become Nathan Hale, Patrick Henry, Caesar Rodney, or John Paul Jones. I do not expect Americans to step into the shoes of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, or Benjamin Franklin. But I do expect Americans to respect their country’s past enough to remain confident, steady, and determined as we fight the battles to come. Because, frankly, the threats we face today pale by comparison to the threats that our ancestors were able to overcome. What one man can do, another can do. What one generation can accomplish, so can the next.

We humans have this psychological “glitch” when it comes to being the “underdog.” When we feel that the challenge before us is almost too great to be met, some of us become even more committed to prevailing. Once we’ve won, however, we begin to take our victories for granted. We start to assume that things were always meant to turn out the way they did. Yet, strangely, the first sign of trouble weakens our resolve. As soon as some other scrappy opponent starts banging down our door, we begin to worry that everything will be lost. We forget that we used to be the ones banging down doors.

What I would like to remind my friends is that we American patriots have an advantage that this militant generation of communists and Islamo-fascists will never have: This is our country, and there are tens of millions of us who will never allow enemies of freedom to conquer it. I don’t care how many “black-pill” pessimists scream, “The end is nigh.” They are wrong.

Our enemies took over the universities. They took over the Deep State. They see total victory within their sights. But they’ve never seen American patriots actually fight.

Meet at the Liberty Tree. We are not sheep for the wolves to devour.  We are the hunters who scare the wolves away. ✪

JB SHURK: WHAT ‘AMERICA FIRST’ REALLY MEANS

ooo

have a dream that American farmers, drillers, miners, industrialists, and manufacturers produce everything that American consumers need. I have a dream that anything worth building is built in America, any job worth doing is done in America, and anything worth buying can be found and shipped within the United States.

Why did we allow ourselves to be convinced Americans should make only a few select things and buy everything else from foreign markets? Why did we allow politicians and Wall Street investors to convince us “free trade” requires slave labor from faraway lands? Why did we spend a century ensuring safer work environments and more dependable wages for our skilled tradesmen only to export those jobs to adversarial nations that care nothing about worker safety or providing above-subsistence standards of living? Why did we fight a Cold War in defense of freedom only to subsidize Chinese communism? Why do we regulate ourselves to death in the name of “fighting global warming,” while China and India inflict the worst environmental damage on the planet?

Prove these statements wrong:

There is no worker on the planet more capable than an American. There is no nation of people more innovative than the United States. There is nothing that Americans import from other nations Americans can’t discover, create, grow, or produce on their own. There is no country on the planet with more educational infrastructure than the United States. There is no country on the planet with a greater incentive to defend its way of life.

I believe that Establishment politicians and multinational investment firms sold us a bill of goods when they told us “free trade” deals, such as the North American Free Trade Agreement, would provide American households greater prosperity. I believe that those politicians and Wall Street investors lied when they told us the United States would become a “service economy” and blue-collar workers would find personal fulfillment as customer service representatives, real estate agents, telephone operators, data technicians, and software coders.

I believe politicians and Big Ag corporations lie when they insist only illegal aliens are willing to sweat in farm fields. I believe politicians who ignore Federal law by establishing “sanctuary cities” and NGOs which aid and abet human smuggling into the United States lie when they say some jobs are “too dirty” for Americans to take. I believe Establishment politicians and Wall Street titans have spent fifty years lying to the American people about the kinds of jobs that Americans should do.

The economy of the United States did not surpass that of the United Kingdom until the third year of WWI in 1916. While the U.K. had been the engine for the global economy for two centuries, America held an inimitable distinction: No other country in the world had maintained higher rates of both intra- and inter-generational mobility.

The American Experiment created an ideal environment for innovation, hard work, investment, and private ownership. Individual workers advanced up the economic ladder during their own lifetimes, and their children and grandchildren ascended even farther. In a few generations, farmers became tradesmen who became merchants who became bankers, lawyers, ministers, and politicians. Respect for private property and a rejection of European social castes made America a land of opportunity.

Since the creation of the Federal Reserve in a rigged Christmas vote in 1913, the American system has been upended. Bankers created a monopoly for themselves to manipulate the value of the American dollar. They, in turn, set the monetary system down a path toward inevitable decoupling from the gold standard. Dollar-printing (and government spending) decreased the value of personal savings and artificially juiced the currency-denominated value of homes, stocks, and other assets; effectively transferring wealth from the poorest Americans to the wealthiest.

As inflation steadily kicked in, central bankers and corporation-controlled politicians looked for ways to limit the rising costs of American goods. They artificially increased demand for the dollar by linking it to oil revenues, offshored American manufacturing to low-wage or slave-wage foreign nations, decreased the quality of finished products, and replaced small businesses with a handful of multinational corporate monopolies. Each of these “band-aids” has preserved Wall Street’s internal mechanisms for generating profits, while destroying the engine of American ingenuity and the physical infrastructure of American industry, manufacturing, and real economic growth.

The end result has been; in charts and graphs, America has appeared to maintain an advanced economy that has consistently grown through the decades, even though its industrial towns have collapsed into rusty graveyards. If you separate the economy of the United States into two separate lines on a graph; one for Main Street businesses across the country and one for multinational businesses running Wall Street, it becomes obvious small American businesses have had no growth (or negative growth) for decades. While the costs of their raw materials, employees, government regulations, and taxes have continued to rise, their profits have dwindled. The engine of American growth in the real economy has been sputtering and dying, while artificially inflated valuations of Wall Street assets have been disguising America’s economic infirmity. Wall Street has become the Potemkin economy hiding America’s loss of industrial strength.

This is no way for a superpower to endure. The United States cannot survive if it is dependent on communist China for chemicals, medicines, circuit boards, electrical components, clothing, machinery, and furniture. The United States cannot survive if it is dependent on other nations for critical hydrocarbon energies (see economically impotent Europe as it struggles to survive both “green energy”-induced inflation and self-imposed sanctions on Russian oil and gas). More importantly, America cannot pass any industrial and manufacturing know-how to future generations if the living generations have no real skills worth preserving. Pretending America can economically flourish on investment portfolios alone is delusional. “Let them be day traders,” is indistinguishable from, “Let them eat cake,” and will inevitably lead to the same bloody guillotine.

When people ask, “What is ‘America First’?” or, “What does ‘Make America Great Again’ actually mean?” or, “Why are President Trump’s tariffs important?” or, “Why should Americans learn to build things again?” the simple answer is this: Economic security is national security. We cannot defend ourselves from foreign enemies if we depend upon our enemies for critical resources. We cannot lift American citizens out of poverty if all the jobs have been exported overseas. We cannot be an innovative nation if our people don’t know how to build things with their hands. We cannot be a self-sufficient nation unless our people are willing to get sweaty and dirty. We cannot be a happy nation unless our people value hard work more than government handouts. We cannot be a nation dedicated to helping each other if we undermine the value of citizenship and community by flooding the country with illegal aliens. We cannot minimize inflation unless we minimize the inflationary effects of open borders on housing, food, and healthcare. We cannot be a wealthy nation if all the “wealth” is created through central bank funny money, tax-and-spend magic tricks, and Wall Street bailouts.

Like him, love him, distrust him, or despise him, President Trump is the first president in more than a century who understands what’s at stake. We either reorient ourselves back toward the American system that generated greater intra- and intergenerational social mobility than anywhere else in the world, or we accept that one day Wall Street’s multinational investment firms will succeed in bleeding this country dry. America will not prosper from open borders, welfare fraud, and central banking.

We must rededicate ourselves to making, building and producing everything. Securing that future is how we Make America Great Again. ✪

THE BULLET WE DODGED

oooo

he legacy media spends its days weaving wild tales of the evils of Donald Trump. The President has his flaws, as do we all, but he’s not nearly the demon that the Left portrays him as. As we approach the midterms, the Democrats seem more intent on running against Trump, who’s not even on the ballot, than running on their policies. Then again, looking at their policies, it’s easy to understand why they have chosen this tactic.

This seems like a good time to pause and reflect about what America would have looked like if Kamala Harris had won the 2024 election. Doing so gives us insights into the candidates running for office now, pushing some of her policies that cost her the race.

Since she couldn’t name any Biden policy she would change, we can assume that America’s borders would have remained wide open. The scenes and images coming out of Spain would have continued along the Rio Grande. Convoys of aliens seeking “asylum” would have likely increased, with hopes of being given full amnesty and the temptation of free food, shelter, and phones once they got to America.

Iran would have continued to enrich uranium and by now would have had an atomic bomb. Would they have been able to resist the temptation to use it on Israel? Would Israel have felt compelled to unleash its nuclear weapons in a preemptive strike? Without Operation Midnight Hammer, the tensions in the Middle East may have been amplified with nuclear strikes.

Venezuela would still be run by Maduro. Drug boats would have freely traveled to the U.S. unimpeded. Tens of thousands of Americans would die of drug overdoses as Kamala maintained the Biden Administration’s hands-off approach with Venezuela.

Global warming would still be a hot topic as the Inflation Reduction Act continued to make Americans’ lives harder in pursuit of bogus science. Your 401k would be worth much less. If you think costs now are bad, continuing the Biden policies would have made things far worse at the grocery store.

Rental prices would continue to rise nationwide because there would be a shortage of low-cost housing due to the massive influx of illegals.

D.C. would still be crime-ridden because National Guard troops were not deployed there. Homelessness in the nation’s capital would remain high as well.  People coming to celebrate the nation’s 250th birthday would be easy pickings.

Let’s talk about the 250th celebration. We all saw the debauchery that Biden and Harris allowed at the Easter Egg roll. Picture that event on steroids. Rather than celebrating America’s greatness, it would have been a depressing series of events talking about how America is a failed experiment. The celebration would be an opportunity for every fringe group to come out of the woodwork and spew their hate.

Censorship would be in full swing. Remember, Harris was a proponent for silencing what she determined to be “disinformation.” Much like what we see in Britain right now, Americans would have been arrested for their memes or for expressing themselves. Identifying as a conservative would have been grounds enough to put you on a government watch list.

The Federal Government would have remained bloated. There would not have been a DOGE effort that trimmed countless jobs and saved taxpayers’ money. USAID would still be a money laundering operation for the Democrat Party.

Chances are good that taxes overall would have to go up to support the spending needs of the Left. Military recruitment numbers would still be in the tank. Eight conflicts around the globe would still be raging because Donald Trump wasn’t elected and in a position to end them. The corporate tax rate would have soared, forcing some businesses to shutter their doors and putting their employees on welfare.

Our foods would still be filled with toxic dyes and chemicals. Statues of St. Fauci would appear. Our gun rights would have been illegally curtailed with bans on high-capacity magazines and “assault-style” weapons. The push for a federal abortion law would have been a high priority. Social Security and Medicare would have been expanded to address the influx of illegals.

We’d still be sending free weapons and billions in financial aid to Ukraine. Putin would have remained emboldened in the war. With weak American leadership continuing, he probably would have unleashed chemical weapons against the Ukrainians by now.

There are a few positives if she had won. The box wine industry would be all that was prospering under a Harris Administration. Likewise, we would have dramatically fewer presidential assassination attempts knowing that Tim Walz was the vice president.

When people attempt to tell you how bad things are with Trump, remind them of what the nation and world would look like if the Queen of Cackles had won. ✪

▶️ THE COMMUNIST THREAT TO AMERICA IS REAL

THE COMMUNIST THREAT TO AMERICA IS REAL

uring his address at Mount Rushmore, on the eve of our nation’s 250th anniversary, President Donald Trump warned Americans of a “resurgence of the Communist threat is now present in our country; including among newcomers who adopt ideologies that are fundamentally contrary to our way of life.”

The President re-emphasized the most important points of the address he delivered to the Faith & Freedom Coalition conference this past June; referring to the self-identified Socialist Democrats who won primary elections as “godless communists:”

“These are not social democrats. These are hardcore, godless communists. They’re godless communists. All communists are godless. They don’t believe in God. This is the most serious threat our country since its existence. In my opinion, 250 years ago. This is a major threat to our country.”

Even more alarming is the fact, in addition to their ties with the radical LGBTQ+ movement, American socialists have become more dangerous by aligning themselves with pro-Sharia Islamists who aim for nothing short of the destruction of our American society.

Last Tuesday, Francesca Hong, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and the Assembly’s Socialist Caucus, almost won the Democrat primary for Wisconsin governor. Hong took to social media to address criticism regarding her previous statements in support of policies aimed at “defunding the police.”

In June, she traveled to California to engage with Hasan Piker, a left-wing Twitch streamer known for making contentious remarks, including a statement that the U.S. “deserved 9/11.” During the same week, she appeared on a program with streamer Michael Beyer, also referred to as Mike from PA, who has faced backlash for claiming that Jews are “demonic.”

Last week, the establishment sector of the Democrat Party was taken aback when Islamic socialist Abdul El-Sayed triumphed over Congresswoman Haley Stevens in a U.S. Senate primary election in Michigan. Should he win in November, he would become the first Muslim ever elected to the United States Senate.

El-Sayed, the son of Egyptian immigrants, ran a campaign based on a leftist agenda, garnering support from notable liberals including senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, along with Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. His progressive campaign was further strengthened by socialists, radical Muslims, and advocates of former Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro. Much like Zohran Mamdani, who was elected as Mayor of New York City last year, El-Sayed’s achievement does, in fact, highlight that there is a Communist threat in the United States.

Indeed, El-Sayed compared Oklahoma’s ban of Sharia Law to the Trail of Tears; the forced displacement and ethnic cleansing of about 60,000 Indians between 1830 and 1850.

“You can’t understand a Sharia ban without understanding the Trail of Tears,” El-Sayed said. “You cannot understand the challenges we face today without understanding white supremacy.”

While the U.S. remains significantly distant from a genuine Marxist society, as the President forewarned, communists have been at work in their anti-American crusade since the Socialist Party of the United States was formed in 1901.

The contemporary Marxist manifesto resembles the utopian socialists of nineteenth-century Europe, emphasizing the themes of exploitation and the liberation from what is termed sexual oppression, particularly as advocated by the LGBTQ+ movement.

The Marxist manifesto of today is like the utopian socialists of nineteenth-century Europe, which focused on exploitation and the liberation of the so-called sexually oppressed, especially as propagated by the LGBTQ+ movement. Key figures such as Charles Fourier and Henri de Saint-Simon in France, along with Robert Owen in Britain and many of their followers, including numerous women, believed that true freedom could only be realized in the absence of masters, the ethos of labor, and the expression of human passions. Fourier, for instance, contended that the suppression of passions harms not only the individual but also society as a whole. The proposed solution was a secular and hedonistic community leading the body politic.

Long before the term ‘homosexuality’ was coined for political reasons, Fourier recognized that both men and women have a wide range of sexual needs and preferences that can change throughout their lives, including same-sex attraction and androgyny. He argued that all types of sexual expression should be accepted, as long as no one is harmed, and that “affirming one’s difference” can actually enhance social unity.

It is interesting to note that during the period of McCarthyism in the U.S. in the early 1950s, there existed a perception that a “Homosexual underground” was aiding the “communist conspiracy,” which was sometimes referred to as the Homintern. This time frame witnessed the rise of various homosexual rights organizations. These groups, now acknowledged as part of the “homophile movement,” often aligned themselves with leftist or socialist principles, including the communist-associated Mattachine Society; established in 1950, it was one of the first national gay rights organizations in the U.S. In the context of the highly charged political climate of the Cold War, homosexuality was depicted as a dangerous, contagious social disease that posed a threat to national security.

Harry Hay, regarded by many as the pioneer of the contemporary gay rights movement in the U.S., initially engaged in trade union activism. In 1934, he, along with his partner, actor Will Geer, orchestrated an 83-day workers’ strike at the San Francisco port. He was also a dedicated member of the Communist Party. Hay and the Mattachine Society were among the first to assert that gay individuals constituted not merely a group of people but rather a “cultural minority.” They advocated for public demonstrations by homosexuals, foreshadowing the later emergence of gay pride parades. Hay’s notion of the “cultural minority” was directly influenced by his studies in Marxism.

This “cultural minority” is seeking to dictate terms to the greater populace of our country, especially with organizations like the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), the largest socialist organization in the country with over 100,000 members and chapters in every state, has consistently advocated for extensive nondiscrimination protections, marriage equality, transgender rights, and more robust legal safeguards, as outlined in a platform initially adopted in 2017. And now they have linked up with the pro-Sharia movement, thus becoming even more callous in their view of American democracy.

President Trump was right to highlight the Communist threat to our American way of life. As Thomas Paine famously stated: “These are the times that try men’s souls.” We, as Americans, cannot remain passive and witness the erosion of the legacy bequeathed to us by our Founding Fathers. We owe it to them, to ourselves, and to our posterity. ✪

CONTROVERSIAL COLORADO PROFESSOR WARD CHURCHILL DIES

ard Churchill, the former University of Colorado professor whose writings and outspoken political views ignited a national debate over academic freedom and free speech, has died. His former lawyer says Churchill died of a stroke.

Iliff School of Theology Professor Emeritus Tink Tinker, a member of the Osage Nation, said Churchill “was part of the American Indian Movement from the early 1980s. All of the people who criticized him never read his body of work. His books get at the truth of what happened and is happening to American Indians on Turtle Island, this continent. It persistently challenges the usual narrative of what I call the American romance.”

Churchill was a longtime professor of ethnic studies at CU Boulder. He became a nationally controversial figure in higher education after an essay he wrote that referred to some of the victims of the 9/11 attacks as “little Eichmanns,” a characterization that prompted widespread condemnation and made Churchill a national figure.

The controversy soon expanded beyond his writings about the 9/11 attacks. In 2005, the University of Colorado launched a formal investigation into allegations Churchill had plagiarized portions of other people’s work, misused sources and fabricated material. University officials also investigated allegations that he had misrepresented his American Indian ancestry.

At the time, university officials emphasized Churchill’s controversial political speech itself could not be the basis for dismissing a tenured professor.

Churchill’s attorney, David Lane, accused the university of conducting an unfair investigation and argued that the case was an extension of the controversy surrounding Churchill’s political views. Churchill denied any wrongdoing.

The controversy also reached beyond his academic writings and into his artwork. Former CBS Colorado reporter Raj Chohan reported a piece of artwork that Churchill made in 1981 closely resembled an illustration by artist Thomas E. Mails that had appeared in Mails’ 1972 book “The Mystic Warriors of the Plains.” Chohan shared pictures of the work titled “Winter Attack” and how it closely resembled a decade-earlier artwork.

Churchill maintained he had disclosed the source when the serigraph was originally produced. But questions remained over whether permission had been obtained from the original copyright holder.

The university investigation eventually concluded that Churchill had committed multiple instances of plagiarism, fabrication, and falsification. In 2007, the university Board of Regents voted to fire him.

Churchill challenged his dismissal in court, arguing that he had been punished for his political speech. In 2009, a Denver jury found that he had been wrongfully fired and awarded him $1 in damages. Subsequent court proceedings did not result in his reinstatement. The American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado argued Churchill had been fired because of his expression and later supported his legal challenge.

To supporters, he was a scholar punished for expressing views that many Americans found offensive. To critics, he represented a failure of academic standards that could not be excused as protected speech. ✪

▶️ AI IS NOW ENGINEERING PATHOGENIC PROTEINS

AI IS NOW ENGINEERING PATHOGENIC PROTEINS

lll

rtificial intelligence has crossed a line that should alarm every living human being. Researchers at Stanford University and the Arc Institute used generative AI models to produce 16 novel bacteriophages; complete, functional viral genomes that successfully infect and kill bacteria in the laboratory. The BBC reports this marks “the first time whole genomes have been successfully designed by AI.” The researchers insist these creations “pose no threat to humans.”

I believe that is a dangerously naive assumption. This isn’t an actual scientific breakthrough; it’s more like a bioweapon prototype being announced dressed in academic robes.

Here’s why this matters: AI allows one person do the work of ten, whether that be in creating bioweapons or basic coding & translation. What once required government laboratories and billions in funding can now be accomplished by a single researcher with a generative model. And the same institutions which have already brought us gain-of-function research are celebrating this achievement as if it were a gift to humanity, rather than a dangerous threat to our very existence.

✪ AI-Generated Viruses Are Future Bioweapons In The Making

The Stanford and Arc Institute researchers who produced those 16 novel bacteriophages weren’t working with exotic bioweapons equipment; they were working with algorithms. The same AI systems which “continue to learn without human supervision,” as Scientific American documented in its coverage of generative adversarial networks. These systems & networks are now being applied to the building blocks of life.

The researchers claim these can phages infect bacteria, but not humans. However, the technique, once demonstrated, cannot be undiscovered. The same generative models which design bacterial viruses today can be aimed at human proteins tomorrow.

Consider what DARPA is already doing. In July 2025, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency announced programs which create a pipeline for turning indirect machine readouts of purported “unknown biothreat” samples into operational digital protein sequences; using algorithms rather than direct observation. They’re building the AI bioweapons pipeline in plain sight, and the Stanford researchers have just handed them the proof of concept.

Researchers who brag about synthetic viruses are really only announcing new pathogenic proteins; and I believe that deserves alarm, not applause. Pandora’s Box is already in the rearview mirror at this point. The bioweapons train has left the station…

✪ These Are Not Viruses: They Are Toxins.

Mainstream virology has never honestly proven viral isolation or contagion. As Drs. Thomas Cowan and Andrew Kaufman have meticulously demonstrated, no scientific institution, government body, research university, or corporation has ever isolated these virus particles from an infected individual. Without physical standards for pathogens like SARS-CoV-2, it’s challenging to verify whether laboratory findings truly reflect real-world conditions.

What we call viruses are really proteins and protein fragments which can be modified to become pathogenic. Consider the striking analysis raised by modernity.news: could the COVID-19 spike protein have been not viral at all, but rather the spike-shaped HERV-K; an ancient endogenous retroviral protein encoded in human DNA and known to activate during inflammation and stress? When over expressed, HERV-K has been linked to the same symptoms seen in COVID and mRNA vaccine injury: cancer, neurological problems, immune system dysfunction.

When AI designs synthetic viruses, it is designing novel molecular structures — toxic proteins which do not occur normally in Nature — which can disrupt human biology, biochemistry and immunology. These are toxins and calling them “viruses” gives them a false legitimacy; implying they are natural phenomena rather than engineered poisons.

✪ The People Running This Experiment Are Either Evil Or Misled

Bad-faith actors can use AI to mass-produce protein toxins. That’s not speculation; it’s the logical endpoint of a research trajectory that includes DARPA’s biothreat programs and the Pentagon’s decades of gain-of-function research. The same corrupt system that gave us gain-of-function bioweapons — the system Dr. Anthony Fauci was caught promoting in a 2012 video — now wants us to believe AI-designed viruses are a medical miracle.

The same system will call these engineered toxins “vaccines, gene therapies” or “prescription drugs.” We already saw this with the spike protein, which enters cell nuclei and suppresses the DNA repair engine of the human body, potentially unleashing cancer, immunodeficiency, autoimmune disorders and accelerated aging.

Even well-meaning researchers inside the medical establishment are usually unwitting pawns of a system which profits from sickness and pushes depopulation. They genuinely believe they’re advancing science; but they’re actually advancing a global depopulation agenda targeting humans.

Here’s the reality: the same pharmaceutical machine which brought us mRNA injections without long-term safety trials, covered up vaccine injuries, continues to push experimental shots on the elderly. That same machine is now salivating over AI-designed biological agents. They will be sold as “the next generation of medicine,” and they will be nothing more than engineered toxins with patent numbers.

✪ AI Hallucinations Turns ‘Helpful’ Proteins Into Nightmares

AI hallucinates. It fabricates facts in text, invents people who don’t exist, and generates images that never happened. Scientific American has documented how AI can produce lifelike photographs that fool the human eye [10] — and how these generative systems sometimes fail in unpredictable ways [3]. If AI hallucinates in text and images, it will also hallucinate protein structures, folding patterns and receptor sites.

A single missed mutation can convert a benign protein into a deadly toxin. When generative AI designs a viral genome, there is no way to predict every emergent property of the resulting molecular machine.

The researchers behind the 16 AI-designed phages claim no harmful proteins were made. That’s not reassuring. That’s the same assurance we heard before every vaccine disaster. The consequences of an AI hallucination in synthetic biology aren’t a weird image or a nonsense paragraph; they’re a novel pathogenic protein that no natural immune system has ever encountered. We are training machines to invent biologically novel poisons — and we’re doing it without a kill switch.

✪ Nature Already Engineered All The Defenses We Need

Here’s the part the bioweapons crowd doesn’t want you to know: nature already engineered the defenses we need. Natural nutrients — astaxanthin, phycocyanin (in spirulina), sulforaphane and vitamin C — protect genetic integrity against protein toxins and oxidative stress.

In my own work, I’ve focused on three key areas to maintain health and resilience: reducing inflammation, neutralizing pathogens, and using strong antioxidants [11]. This isn’t guesswork; it’s biological reality. High-dose vitamin C, taken in incremental doses of up to 1,000 milligrams per hour during waking hours, can provide profound nutritional support against oxidative damage [12]. Magnesium and vitamin C are also crucial components of cognitive health and immune resilience [13]. (Vitamin C also makes astaxanthin work better and longer, for reasons involving chemistry and oxidative states.)

Instead of trusting synthetic biology from the same institutions that brought us gain-of-function research and mRNA injections, I believe we should rely on God’s intelligent design and natural medicine to counter this new threat. The human immune system, supported by proper nutrition, is the most sophisticated defense mechanism in existence. It has survived every pathogen nature ever threw at it — and it will outperform any AI-designed toxin if we give it the nutritional support it deserves.

✪ Conclusion: This Knowledge Cannot Be Unlearned

We never should have learned to use machines to construct pathogenic proteins. But the knowledge is out there now, and it cannot be unlearned.

The question isn’t whether AI-designed biological agents will be weaponized; it’s whether we’ll be prepared when they are. Our defense is not in the CDC, the WHO, or Big Pharma. Our defense is in our own immune systems, strengthened by natural medicine and the intelligent design of the natural world.

Trust nature. Trust your body. And do not trust the people who are building the next plague with a neural network. ✪

▶️ LUIGI MANGIONE TO ACCEPT PLEA DEAL

LUIGI MANGIONE TO ACCEPT PLEA DEAL

dddd

ultiple reports indicate that a plea deal for Luigi Mangione is in the wind which could resolve the fFederal charges against him. The New York Post reports Mangione is “expected to plead guilty Friday” to Federal charges against him in connection with the 2024 murder of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The Federal charges against Mangione are two counts of stalking resulting in death.

The person, who was not authorized to talk publicly about the case and spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity, cautioned that Mangione could change his mind. If he follows through, it would be a stunning development in a case that rattled business leaders while galvanizing their critics.

Mangione’s lawyers, and spokespeople for the Justice Department and Manhattan Federal prosecutors, declined to comment.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s office is also prosecuting Mangione on state-level murder charges. The state trial is scheduled to begin on September 8 with jury selection. Life sentences are likely in each case if Mangione is found guilty.

Lawyers for the prosecution and defense were quiet about any potential deal. Regardless of the back-and-forth between both teams, Mangione could still decide not to take a deal and instead take his chances on a trial.

Under New York law, a state prosecution could be barred if the Federal case is resolved first, but it isn’t automatic.

Settling the Federal charges against him could have direct ramifications for the state trial; due to so-called double jeopardy laws in New York state which prevent an individual from being tried twice for the same crime. On Thursday, Mangione met with his lawyers at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.

Mangione’s federal charges allege that he traveled across state lines by bus to stalk and kill Thompson and that he used means such as a cellphone, the internet, interstate highways and staying at a hostel that serves out-of-state customers while planning and carrying out the attack. The state charges pertain to the killing itself, as well as firearms offenses.

U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York James McDonald declined to say what might take place at Friday’s court session. “There’s a conference scheduled for 11 a.m. on Friday, that’s all we can say at this time,” McDonald said. Many experts are saying all signs point to a deal being discussed.

“Why would they be going to Federal court tomorrow when they should be preparing for the state trial?” said Gary Galperin, a professor of law at Cardozo School of Law. “It would be reasonable to speculate they may be trying to enter a guilty plea,” he said.

Mangione’s decision to plead guilty comes after a series of setbacks for his defense. In January, U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett took the death penalty off the table but ruled that prosecutors could use items collected from Mangione’s backpack during his arrest as evidence against him.

They included a 3D-printed pistol that investigators said matched the one used to kill Thompson and a notebook in which authorities say Mangione described his intent to kill an insurance executive.

In June, Mangione’s lawyers said they would pursue a psychiatric defense in the state case but reversed course a day later. The defense, involving claims that he was suffering from extreme emotional disturbance at the time of the killing, isn’t allowed in Federal court.

Surveillance video of the killing showed a masked gunman shooting Thompson from behind. Police say “delay, deny” and “depose” were written on the ammunition, mimicking a phrase used to describe how insurers avoid paying claims.

Mangione, an Ivy League graduate from a wealthy Maryland family, was arrested five days later at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, about 230 miles west of Manhattan.

“If Luigi Mangione takes a plea federally, then the question is, does this state double jeopardy law become triggered?” asked Donna Rotunno, a Chicago-based defense attorney, Fox News contributor and the host of “Crime & Justice,” Fox said the situation is such that a Federal deal may limit the state’s options. “The prosecutors reached out to Judge Carro via letter back in July when they were talking about which case should be set for trial first and the importance of setting the state case for trial before the federal one,” Rotunno said, referring to State Supreme Court Judge Gregory Carro, who is hearing the state trial.“So now here we are in a situation where the state is saying wait, wait, why is the government allowing Luigi Mangione to possibly take a plea on the federal side? Because if that’s the case, it could potentially upend our case on the state side,” she said.

An online fundraiser for his legal defense fund raised more than $1.5 million, and several dozen supporters have shown up to his court appearances, some wearing green clothing — the color worn by the Mario Bros. video game character Luigi — and “FREE LUIGI” T-shirts. ✪

TERAFAB: THE LARGEST BUILDING ON EARTH WILL BE IN TEXAS

lon Musk is betting the next phase of his sprawling technology empire will utilize a building on a scale that has never existed before. SpaceX and Tesla are now building Terafab, a 100-million-square-foot semiconductor manufacturing facility in Grimes County, Texas, more than five times the size of the world’s next largest building.

▶️ 53 Seconds

“Terafab Texas will be the largest and most valuable building on Earth by far. And it will be stunningly beautiful,” Musk wrote on X.

With about 18.9 million square feet of floor space, the New Century Global Center in Chengdu, China, currently holds the record for the world’s largest building. But Terafab is expected to exceed that quickly: “The first phase of the Terafab project represents a capital investment of more than $16.8 billion and will create 3,000 new jobs,” Texas Gov. Greg Abbott wrote in a press release.

The accompanying vision is even more ambitious than the building itself. The Terafab website describes the project as a vertically integrated chip factory that will combine logic, memory, and advanced packaging under one roof. Both SpaceX and Tesla will benefit from the facility, which is designed to produce more than 1 terawatt of computing potential annually.

“We’re now embarking on the most epic chip-building effort—combining logic, memory, and advanced packaging all under one roof,” said Musk in a press release. The project seeks to “close the gap” between the chip production necessary for today and the demand for future production when humanity, according to Musk, eventually embarks on space travel.

“Terafab is bringing cutting-edge manufacturing to America, creating thousands of high-paying jobs,” he continued, “and enabling us to produce AI chips at scale for use on Earth and in space.”

✪ Building The Future: Vertically

Terafab is less of a conventional semiconductor factory rather than an attempt by Musk to build an enormous piece of his own technology supply chain. Both companies expect their combined demand for computing power to eventually exceed 1 terawatt. Terafab will bring chip manufacturing, packaging, and testing into one singular operation. The project aspires to launch a galactic civilization by harnessing “all of the energy on a planet,” echoing Musk’s sci-fi dreams.

Terafab’s website ties the factory to Musk’s longer-term vision of AI infrastructure. According to the site, the project is intended to produce AI chips at scale, supporting a vision that includes  as many as 1 million Tesla Optimus robots, 10 million tons of mass launched into orbit annually, and more than 1 terawatt of solar power.

SpaceX went public in June, raising $75 billion by selling 555.56 million shares at $135 apiece. While the company had an initial valuation of about $1.77 trillion at the time, the public markets have already forced investors to confront the costs behind Musk’s ambitions. SpaceX reported a $541 million loss in its first quarterly earnings report as a public company, despite generating $7.8 billion in revenue. The $16.8 billion announced for Terafab is only the initial investment.

Musk hopes to use taxpayer dollars to offset some of the costs associated with building the largest single property in the world. The project has filed eight tax incentive applications with the two local school districts, asking to freeze school maintenance and operations property taxes at roughly 48% of appraised value for 10 years per phase. Terafab is asking the state to cover the difference of the maintenance and operations (M&0) and interest and sinking (I&S) taxes using the Texas Jobs, Energy, Technology, and Innovation, or JETI, program.

The company’s explanation for the tax breaks centered on the cost differential between Texas and “competing jurisdictions,” it wrote in the applications.

“Absent the limitation, the project IRR would fall below the minimum investment threshold, and competing jurisdictions (e.g., Arizona) would present a more favorable after-tax return,” the application read, “in which case the project would likely be relocated outside Texas.”

✪ Texas Is Taking The Bet

For Abbott, Texas is willing to take the tax hit. Texas extended SpaceX a $30 million Texas Enterprise Fund grant according to Abbott’s press release. SpaceX is already headquartered in Texas, as well as both Starbase’s launch facility and its manufacturing plant. Terafab is just another testament to Musk’s Texas footprint, Abbott said.

“Texas is where big ideas grow even bigger,” the governor said in the release. He called Terafab a “first-of-its-kind” facility that would accelerate chip production and create thousands of new jobs.

The Terafab website compares the planned 100 million square feet with Tesla’s roughly 10-million-square-foot Gigafactory Texas and says the facility is designed around production at “terawatt scale.” ✪

n Thursday’s broadcast of MS NOW’s “On the Line,” Rep. Jake Auchincloss (D-MA) said if Democrats take the majority in the midterm elections, impeaching Secretary of War Pete Hegseth will be a priority. Auchincloss said, “There was no plan for this war. This president launched this war without consulting allies, without consulting Congress, without consulting his own cabinet.”

He added, “When the very top of the chain of command is corrupt, is incompetent, cannot articulate a mission, cannot execute a mission, it starts to corrode the very basis of that good order and discipline. This is what makes me so worried about the continuation of this quagmire in the Middle East, is that, however bad it is right now, it could get so much worse if Congress does not take away the reins from this president.”

Host Alicia Menendez said, “You have repeatedly called on Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to resign if Democrats are to take back control of Congress. Will impeachment be a priority?”

Auchincloss said, “Yes, it should be, absolutely. We need an inquiry. We need oversight and investigations. And if the facts yield an impeachment recommendation, we need to pursue that vigorously. This man was unqualified and incompetent to the post on day one, and he has underperformed those abysmal expectations.” ✪

▶️ THE REIGN IN SPAIN: PEDRO SANCHEZ’S KINGDOM

THE REIGN IN SPAIN: PEDRO SANCHEZ’S KINGDOM

lll

n the middle of April, Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez summoned the world’s leftist statesmen to Barcelona for what he called a Global Progressive Mobilization. There are not many leftist statesmen to choose from these days. But Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico and Lula of Brazil rallied round Sánchez, and so did the representatives of activist philanthropies—Bill Gates’s people and George Soros’s, too. Various agitators came for environmental and sexual causes, with their earrings and keffiyehs and polyglot t-shirts.

It was a coronation of sorts. Through an assiduous campaign of policy-shaping, speech-making, China-courting, and Trump-trolling, Sánchez has managed to identify himself to many non-Spaniards as the leader of the global opposition. What Trump explores, Sánchez deplores. Boss of the Socialist Workers’ Party of Spain (PSOE) with only a brief interruption since 2014, prime minister since 2018, and president of the Socialist International since 2022, Sánchez was accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza within weeks of the 2023 Hamas attacks. In 2025 he repudiated the promise of other NATO leaders to increase their defense spending to 5% of GDP. This past January, as the Trump Administration’s ICE arrests in Minnesota brought global opprobrium, Sánchez publicized a plan to give amnesty to half a million migrants. And he has been prominent among the critics of Trump’s Iranian misadventure, even refusing the United States the use of Spanish air bases at Rota and Morón for refueling and repairs. Much of the Spanish establishment has been urging Sánchez to conduct his foreign policy in a more bipartisan way, but as the former foreign minister Alfonso Dastis recently told the Madrid daily El Mundo, “the problem is that he views everything through the lens of heightening the contrast with Trump.”

In most foreign capitals, Sánchez’s strategy has been a smashing success. The Berliner Zeitung calls Sánchez the “leader of the global left” for the French business magazine Challenges, he is the “champion of the anti-Trump resistance.” The revelation by Reuters in late April that one Pentagon official had proposed suspending Spain from NATO was another feather in Sánchez’s cap. Global public opinion is increasingly inclined to judge Sánchez against Trump, and the verdict has favored Sánchez.

Except, perhaps, in Spain itself. There, the international hero is viewed by a large part of his electorate as a disgrace. He is jeered when he appears in public. People throw mud at him, and three of his longtime advisors have been sent to jail. His PSOE keeps losing regional elections by historic margins—in Extremadura last December, in Aragon in February, and in its historic stronghold of Andalucía in mid-May. He is not term-limited, but he must call an election by August 2027, and his prospects of being re-elected appear vanishingly small. Sánchez, who for a decade now has shown a Houdini-like ability to escape from political disaster, is counting on Trump’s reputational toxicity to rescue him from this one. But for the moment it doesn’t look like that is going to happen. In fact, nationalists are surging in Spain, and new criminal investigations involving socialist influence peddling and slander of judges have left Sánchez fighting for his political life.

✪ Dirty Sánchez’s Bag Of Political Tricks

A politician who stays in power when he is at odds with the times must have a gift. Sánchez knows Spanish society well—its generations-old resentments, its class anxieties, its vanities—and deploys that knowledge with agility. He was president of the PSOE in 2016 when a disappointing election left it facing an unpalatable choice. After four months of deadlocked negotiations, Sánchez’s socialist colleagues were pressuring him to enter a coalition with the conservative People’s Party (PP), which, under its lackluster premier Mariano Rajoy, had fallen just short of a majority.

Why do that? Why compromise with the party’s arch-rivals? Because not doing it was likely to produce elections in which the socialists would do even worse. The public had been clamoring for a more radical politics ever since the finance crisis of 2008-09 and the currency crisis that followed. Spain had a new party called Podemos, which is Spanish for “Yes, We Can.” (It was the Obama era.) Podemos wanted even bolder economic redistribution than the socialists did, along with new kinds of identity politics. Now it was breathing down the PSOE’s neck, running just two points behind them in the polls and with nearly as large a parliamentary delegation. If the PSOE did not join with the PP, new elections might have to be called, risking a defeat that would sweep them into the dustbin of progressive history. Pablo Iglesias, Podemos’s leader, described what was going on as a passing of the torch. Rather than fend off Podemos by pretending to be a centrist, Sánchez resigned. With three advisors, he drove around Spain for several months, putting 20,000 miles on their battered Peugeot. That trip is now the stuff of socialist legend. While their colleagues back in Madrid bore the responsibility for having compromised, Sánchez and his team went directly to Podemos’s base and made it their own. In the process, they built a new political machine with the help of the hardball political activists of Spain’s small cities. Within a decade, several of Sánchez’s traveling companions would be in jail.

The gamble paid off. Sánchez regained his party chairmanship in 2017 and toppled Rajoy with a skillfully planned legislative corruption inquiry. Once he was prime minister himself, Sánchez assembled a charismatic and unconventional cabinet—with an astronaut as his science minister, a crusading prosecutor as his justice minister, a gay interior minister, and a bestselling author as his culture minister. It was unanimously “feminist” and two-thirds female. Its countercultural makeup was enough to begin undermining Podemos’s claim to the hearts of Spain’s progressive youth. But it was not enough to win Sánchez an electoral majority when he ran for re-election at the end of his first full term in 2023. He fell just short.

Or so it seemed. Sánchez’s political inventiveness came once again to the fore. Catalonia, the eastern region centering on Barcelona, has a separate language and history from Spain and has long enjoyed a certain autonomy from Madrid. The region’s nationalist leaders had staged a referendum on independence in 2017, before Sánchez came back to power. The conservative government in Madrid, along with most Spaniards, considered the referendum illegal and even treasonous. Now, years later, several Catalan leaders were abroad, under threat of arrest should they return to Spain.

Sánchez the campaigner had vowed to bring the Catalans to justice. But Sánchez the coalition-builder considered the matter in a different light. He promised an amnesty for the referendum leaders in exchange for the votes of a conservative bloc of secessionists to invest him for a second term. It was a losing deal for everyone. Courts blocked the promised amnesty for Carles Puigdemont, leader of the referendum movement, and Sánchez reneged on much of the agreement’s fine print concerning devolved control over immigration and regional finances. The Catalans found themselves trapped in an unsympathetic coalition with no new national prerogatives to show for it. Sánchez, meanwhile, wound up dependent on a fiscally conservative party that would not vote for his profligate budgets, and now he has not passed one in four years. In a Spanish context this is a catastrophe. Western citizens don’t always realize it, but setting government priorities through an orderly budget is the basic work of democracy. As surely as a country without a border is not really a country, a government that cannot pass a budget is not really a government.

Now Sánchez was running out of tricks. His demagogic provocations followed ever more closely on his political setbacks. In regional elections in Galicia in February 2024 the PSOE suffered their worst-ever loss. With a string of upcoming regional elections in the Basque country, Catalonia, and the European Union, Sánchez launched his campaign against Israel, recognizing a Palestinian state in March of that year.

✪ From Minnesota To Madrid

Sánchez’s reinvention as Donald Trump’s arch-nemesis follows the same pattern: it comes against the backdrop of almost nonstop bad press. Sánchez has been embroiled in scandals for much of his latest term. He has never been wholly free of them: his wife, Begoña Gomez, is the daughter of a Madrid entrepreneur who reportedly once ran a network of gay saunas. Though this has been the cause of considerable mirth and gossip, it is not necessarily illegal. Sánchez’s wife is now accused of illegalities, though, in four different corruption affairs, which involve misappropriation of a government-contracted software program for private gain, use of public employees for private tasks, and influence peddling. In the spring of 2024, as a string of charges against his wife were filed, Sánchez announced that he was taking five days off from running the country to mull over whether to continue. Continue he did, claiming that the prosecutions against his wife were politically motivated.

Just as serious have been the scandals that permeate the circle of advisors who helped Sánchez revive his career after 2016. A shambling operative named Koldo García was alleged by an investigative committee to have taken millions during the Covid epidemic for a large order of masks that were never delivered and possibly never even manufactured. Koldo went to jail. His mentor (and Sánchez’s close advisor), the party secretary and congressman Santos Cerdán, was called before a congressional investigative committee and jailed under suspicion of taking kickbacks. In late May, Cerdán was implicated in a campaign to undermine the judges investigating Sánchez’s family. The congressman José Luis Ábalos, who brought Sánchez to power by laying out the corruption case against Rajoy on the floor of the chamber and who later became Sánchez’s transportation minister, was also wrapped up in the Koldo case, and resigned. He, too, was eventually jailed, and last year was alleged to have used public money to hire prostitutes. There were other scandals involving Latin American progressive regimes—Maduro’s Venezuela, above all—and secret shipments of currency and gold. This May, investigators announced that former PSOE prime minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero was the target of an investigation for kickbacks. He allegedly steered money from the European Union’s Covid rescue fund to a minuscule Spanish airline, Plus Ultra, with close ties to the Maduro regime.

By the turn of this year, it was understandable that Sánchez might wish to change the subject. The biggest news in most Western countries was the Trump Administration’s disorderly attempt to crack down on illegal immigration in Minnesota, a series of deadly mishaps that went a long way to discredit a policy that had until then been one of Trump’s strengths. Three days after the activist Alex Pretti was shot dead in Minneapolis, Sánchez promised to pursue a more humane course: praising the contribution migrants were making to the Spanish economy, he proposed regularizing 500,000 of them, most of whom were easy-to-assimilate Spanish speakers from Central America and elsewhere.

This was a gamble. Spain is undergoing a wave of immigration unmatched in the history of nation-states, except perhaps by contemporary Ireland. With one of the world’s lowest birthrates, Spain has seen its native population shrink since the turn of the century. Yet over the same period the number of people living in Spain has leapt from under 40 million to over 50. All of the increment is due to immigration.

Sánchez’s regularization was not popular: lacking a majority for it in the Congress of Deputies, he imposed it by decree. What is more, as is often the case in such initiatives, the provisional numbers disseminated by the government looked like lowball estimates. Some scholars asserted the figure could rise into the millions. And for all the assurances of Sánchez’s allies, the North African embassies were as noteworthy for long lines of applicants as the Latin American ones. These were the Sánchez voters of tomorrow.

If there is one feeling that a majority of Spaniards share with Donald Trump, it is impatience with mass migration. Sánchez nonetheless had a couple reasons to think he could benefit from an anti-Trumpian policy, even when it came to immigration. First, Spain has gained a reputation in recent months as an economic beacon of the Western world. The Financial Times called it Europe’s “standout economy,” since its GDP had grown at 3% since 2024, while other countries were stuck at 1% and Germany was seeing no growth at all. But the general public didn’t feel like Spain was prospering. The think tank Funcas found that 55% of Spaniards thought the economy was getting worse, versus only 20% who thought it was getting better. And the public was right. Adding 25 or 30% to a country’s population will almost inevitably make the national economy “grow.” But it may well have no effect, or even a negative effect on individual incomes. If one controls for population, Spain’s performance looks unimpressive. In exchange for a demographic disruption that has put its centuries-old culture under threat, Spain has managed to grow, in per capita terms, at roughly the level of its European neighbors—at a time when Europe has been the global economy’s basket case.

The second reason that made Sánchez’s anti-Trump positioning a promising strategy is a matter of history. Spain is the most anti-American country in Europe. It shares none of the history that makes pro-American countries pro-American. During the great years of European emigration in the 19th century, Spain’s huddled masses yearning to breathe free had other countries, Hispanophone ones, to go to. In 1898 the United States, on a flimsy pretext, laid claim to Spain’s possessions in Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines, smashing the last vestiges of Spain’s once world-bestriding empire, and with it the last vestiges of Spanish imperial pride. In the 20th century, Spain was neutral in both world wars, and had no need to be rescued from either Nazism or Communism—nor did it require forgiveness for bringing those about. For a long time, Spaniards understood their civil war of the 1930s, which led to four decades of military dictatorship under General Francisco Franco, as a time when they rescued themselves from Communism. But since Franco’s death in 1975 they have tended not to think that, at least not officially, and there is no reason why a contemporary Spaniard would wish an American president well as he sought to put an American stamp on Cuba or Venezuela.

✪ Franco-American

We know this historic Spanish anti-Americanism can be activated at any time because it was activated quite recently—when Spain turned against the United States in the Iraq war. This was a turning point in NATO’s history and a turning point for Spain. The quarter-century between the death of Franco and the destruction of the World Trade Center in 2001 had seen an impressive re-knitting of Spanish society. The formula for reconciliation had been, in the words of the French-Spanish Marxist Jorge Semprún, amnistía y amnesia. Forgive and forget. It worked well.

But the reconciliation was less stable than it looked. The society that emerged from Franco’s dictatorship had a lot of conservative traits, but progressive forces had more cohesion and dynamism, since conservatives had fallen out of the habit of debating what they stood for. Between 1996 and 2004, José María Aznar, the country’s most gifted conservative politician since Franco, managed to fight that tendency, uniting non-left-wing Spaniards around a vaguely Reaganite program of conservative social values and free markets. Spain boomed. The country had joined NATO in 1982, but, once within it, had tended to follow the foreign-policy lead of France. In 1997, the year NATO held its summit in Madrid, Aznar cast his lot with Bill Clinton’s United States, winning the lifelong resentment of French president Jacques Chirac. This looked like a decisive change of direction for Spain. Events would reveal it to be a temporary arrangement.

When al-Qaeda attacked the United States on 9/11, Aznar pledged himself to George W. Bush’s War on Terror—making the bold symbolic gesture of joining Bush and Tony Blair in the Azores for a summit the week before the war was launched. But that was all he could do—to the alarm of the whole alliance, 85% of Spaniards were opposed to joining the United States in a military adventure. Aznar did not envision for Spain the role that Britain, Poland, and eventually Italy played in the war. But he flouted public opinion by backing it.

Almost exactly a year later, three days before the 2004 national elections, which Aznar’s conservative successor Rajoy was set to win easily, al-Qaeda detonated bombs in four commuter trains passing through Madrid, killing almost 200 people. Spaniards did not rally round the flag—they came to the conclusion that hundreds of their fellow citizens had been killed in a war that their country had no business fighting. Spaniards voted in the PSOE, then run by the leftist José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, who had said he would pull Spain out of the Iraq war if elected. He did more than that. He took advantage of his accidental premiership to recast the entire post-Franco political bargain. You could call his program socialist: by 2008, when the global finance crisis arrived, Spain was in grave economic peril. In May 2011, Barack Obama warned Zapatero sternly that he would have to adopt an austerity program and change Spain’s constitution to favor foreign creditors if Spain were to receive economic help.

Zapatero was tacking wholly away from the United States anyway. He grew close to the Venezuelan dictatorship of Hugo Chávez and would eventually become, as noted above, a key player in Sánchez’s operations there. Zapatero was also involved in Sánchez’s steady tightening of the PSOE’s ties to China, which Sánchez has now visited four times. Zapatero maintains important connections to the Shenzhen-based telecommunications company Huawei.

But the main thing Zapatero did was to recast Spanish history and Spanish national identity. In 2007 he passed a law of memoria histórica—making the condemnation of Franco’s regime the official policy of the government. This meant toppling statues, banning certain official commemorations, and unleashing progressive campaigners on streets and in courtrooms. In its idiosyncratic way, Spain was the first Western nation to adopt the mixed regime of pedantry and iconoclasm that would acquire the name “woke.” Its overarching focus on human rights and international law, moreover, posed great obstacles to legislating against mass migration, which now began to escalate steeply.

This is the politics that Sánchez—who rose through Zapatero’s political machine—has fought to represent and extend. To Zapatero’s law of memoria histórica he added one on memoria democrática, mandating high school instruction about the dictatorship, removing Franco’s body from the memorial where it reposed, and establishing a schedule of fines for those who use or promote symbols of the dictatorship—placing Franco’s rule on roughly the same moral plane that Germany places Hitler’s, or that the United States at the high tide of woke placed Jim Crow.

An added benefit for the socialists was that this politics shattered Spanish conservatism. Mariano Rajoy, a representative of the liberal wing of Aznar’s Popular Party, was superb at shoring up Spain’s financial accounts in the wake of Zapatero’s mismanagement, but disinclined to contest this society-consuming cultural project, incapable of uniting the country around any other, and undermined by his own corrupt appointees. (Today the progressive newspaper El País covers the ongoing scandals from Rajoy’s premiership, which ended a decade ago, as zealously as the conservative El Mundo covers those of Sánchez.) In a now-notorious speech in the city of Elche in 2018, Rajoy declared the PP a “managerial party.” The conservatism that Aznar had consolidated split up again. The PP became a muscular businessmen’s party that took control of the boom economy in newly skyscraper-studded Madrid, which regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso, a charismatic ex-journalist, has turned into the most right-wing capital city in Europe. For a while a decade ago, some conservatives were attracted to a new party of liberal technocrats called Ciudadanos, now defunct. But conservatives are gravitating more and more to the nationalistic, anti-immigration, and sometimes explicitly Trumpian party Vox, which was founded in 2013, the same year as Germany’s AfD.

The real story in Spanish politics in recent months has seemed to revolve around which party will lead the likely conservative succession to Sánchez: the capitalistic PP or the patriotic Vox. It is important to remember that Sánchez the political escape artist has been counted out before. But the experience of Sánchez’s willingness to make a coalition with anyone has cured the PP of a timidity one often sees among parties of the European conservative establishment. For France’s Républicains or Germany’s Christian Democrats, populist parties are still too uncouth to govern with. Unlike them, the PP has been willing to form coalitions with Vox in several Spanish regions, even if Vox has proved a temperamental partner.

Vox, while smaller, has the momentum now. The story in region after region where elections have been held is that the socialists fall to historic lows, while PP dependence on its potential Vox coalition partner grows. That’s what happened in Andalucía in mid-May, where the PP lost its parliamentary majority but emerged shored up by a much stronger Vox. The key to Vox’s recent regional victories has been its focus on prioridad nacional, a preference in government policy for Spain’s own citizens above immigrants and others. Many important institutions consider it anathema: Sánchez’s socialists, of course, the so-called human-rights community, the country’s paper of record El País (for which prioridad nacional is “a euphemism that uses two positive words to imply inequality, racism and xenophobia”). But almost as opposed to nationalism are a large part of the PP and much of the Catholic Church, where voters show signs of turning toward Vox. The Vox counterargument is that if there’s no prioridad nacional, there’s no nación. And that is because nations ask a certain special class of people—the citizenry—to sacrifice and even, if need be, to die for them. Without prioridad nacional, citizenship is not a blessing but a curse.

Pedro Sánchez has been having a good run against the American nationalism of Donald Trump. Running against Spain’s own nationalism is, unsurprisingly, proving a harder task. ✪

ARGENTINA’S MILEI AIMS TO KILL THE DEBT STATE FOR GOOD

eee

ain will always fall downwards, the saying goes. “Don’t try to change the impossible.” And government will always run up debt to buy votes and print “counterfeit” currency to cover the deficits.

While this is taken for granted, a revolution led by Argentine President Javier Milei aims to break that cycle. If it succeeds, deficit spending (and currency inflation) may become a thing of the past, too.

What Milei is tackling is part of what’s sometimes known as the “Cycle of Democracy.” (It’s usually called the “Tytler Cycle,” but Alexander Tytler didn’t actually write it.) It goes:

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations has been 200 years.

Milei’s bold plan is called the “Grillete Fiscal,” meaning the “fiscal shackle.” The plan is, too, for it to constrain not just his current ruling government, but future ones as well.

Commentator Thomas Kolbe reported on the story last Wednesday, contrasting Argentina’s recent economic success with Germany’s statism-born malaise:

While Germany’s debt spiral is accelerating ever faster, Argentine President Javier Milei is steering his country in the opposite direction. Germany’s statists will soon be left looking foolish once it becomes obvious that the German model has failed.

Only contrast reveals one’s own mistakes. Javier Milei is the antithesis of Germany’s political class, and the comparison could hardly be starker. While Germany continues to expand the state, Argentina is slashing subsidies and radically reducing the size of its public bureaucracy. While Berlin piles up enormous amounts of public debt, Buenos Aires is posting a primary budget surplus. [German Chancellor] Friedrich Merz believes in the healing powers of state intervention, whereas Milei is deregulating markets and paving the way for an investment boom.

Argentina has achieved an economic turnaround while Germany continues its economic decay. Argentina’s economy is growing steadily, private-sector employment is expanding, and the poverty rate is falling rapidly.

At a time when Germany is doubling down on debt, the arms industry, and green state planning, Milei appears like a comet defying both political gravity and conventional doctrines of government.

✪ The Plan

Not willing to rest on his laurels, however, Milei now wants to make economic sanity permanent. Website La Hora reports on the fiscal-shackle plan, writing the proposal (auto-translated from Spanish):

…is part of a package of economic and institutional reforms presented at the end of July 2026, which includes modifications to the Central Bank’s Organic Charter, the prohibition of monetary financing by the Treasury and other reforms to the financial and insurance system. The declared objective is to shield the balance of the public accounts and reduce political discretion over spending. …

The mechanism proposed by Milei goes a step further: if the State enters into a deficit and a balanced budget is not approved, automatic restrictions similar to a US shutdown would be activated. Non-essential spending would be paralyzed, the government would not be able to expand spending without budget support, and the pressure would fall on Congress and the Executive to correct the problem. The philosophy is to turn fiscal balance into an institutional lock, not a simple political promise.

However, the most disruptive aspect of the proposal is not only the adjustment of spending, but who pays the political cost.

According to the design laid out by Milei, if the deficit persists for several months and Congress does not correct the budget, automatic sanctions would be activated that include the freezing of hiring and transfers; and in one of the versions explained by the president himself and by analysts who support the initiative, the President, his ministers and legislators would stop receiving their salaries for the duration of the non-compliance. The idea is to alter the incentives: that the cost of the deficit ceases to fall solely on citizens and begins to have direct consequences for those who make fiscal decisions.

Ending the debt state truly would be a revolution. It’s not just that it would encourage fiscal responsibility, either. Remember that money is big government’s lifeblood; limiting the supply limits government. This is, too, where another already mentioned part of Milei’s plan enters the equation. As BBC News Mundo related (auto-translated from Spanish) July 31, Milei’s Central Bank reforms would:

“put an end to … an uncontrolled issuance of banknotes that has generated an inflationary spiral in the country. The reform, the president argued, “comes to put an end to the scam of counterfeiting money to finance high politics.”

“Scam” is the right word. The United States, for example, increases the money supply (i.e., counterfeits currency) by six to seven percent annually on average. This amounts to approximately $1.4 trillion (as of now), backed by nothing, added to the economy per year. This dilutes the value of the dollars in your pocket.

So it’s no wonder late economist Walter E. Williams once made the crack he did about this legalized lunacy. He said that were he brought before a judge for counterfeiting, he’d say he was just engaging in “monetary policy.”

✪ A Better Way

Speaking of Williams, he’d likely appreciate Milei’s plan. For it would eliminate what Williams called the two forms of hidden taxation: deficit spending and currency debasement (money printing). Yet it could be improved.

Since only accountability changes bad behavior, denying profligate legislators their salary (currently just a proposal) would be a good start. Another consequence would be far more effective, however.

Question: What do politicians generally crave above all else? With people in high finance, the answer might be money. But with politicians it’s power. That’s a major reason why they enter politics and not business.

Given this, the consequence for failing to balance the budget after a prescribed period of time should be automatic expulsion from office. This theoretical plan would mandate that a new election would then have to be held. And the expelled legislators would not be allowed to run in it.

This would completely alter the incentives. Politicians currently are motivated to spend our money to buy votes and special-interest-group support to retain power. Deficits are just the broken eggs to make their omelet. The expulsion consequence would reverse this: Avoiding deficits would be their omelet.

And the special-interest groups’ broken hearts would be their broken eggs. To quote philosopher Herbert Spencer, “The ultimate result of shielding men from the effects of folly, is to fill the world with fools” — and legislatures with foolish spenders. Politicians will continue wasting our money until and unless destroying our budget means destroying their careers. ✪
