✪ Commentary: A Simple Reminder About What Makes America So Great

irst, we are a nation of settlers. This is the country where our ancestors often risked and lost their lives in the pursuit of religious freedom and opportunity. From the Mayflower to the Oregon Trail, they persevered even under the most extreme of hardships. Davy Crockett and Laura Ingalls Wilder continue to inspire children today. 

We defeated the mighty British Empire on our own soil to secure our independence. American soldiers endured the cold, disease and death of Valley Forge. Under the training and instruction of Baron von Steuben, a Prussian, the Continental Army engaged the Revolutionary War with greater discipline, unity and strength.

Our country’s founding documents are marvels of human history. The Declaration of Independence eloquently lays out the mission of Government; to protect and secure our God-given, unalienable rights. The Constitution, drawing from Biblical wisdom & influence, history and political philosophers, codifies the necessary checks and balances to limit the power of Government. 

At the cost of hundreds of thousands of lives, we threw off the shackles of slavery. The contingent of our national heroes is too large; their names too numerous to list, but include such figures as Nathan Hale, Harriet Tubman, Teddy Roosevelt and Billy Graham. 

Our land is incredibly beautiful and rich in resources. Consider the vastness of the Grand Canyon, the power of Niagara Falls and the stunning views in Canyonlands National Park. Our beaches, from Hawaii to California & the East Coast, draw visitors from all over the world. 

We conquered and tamed the topography of our rugged continent first with the Transcontinental Railroad; and later, the Interstate Highway System. We constructed the Empire State Building in less than 14 months. We built the Hoover Dam. We carved the faces of our greatest presidents into the side of a mountain. We built the first airplane in 1903; and less than 70 years later, put the first man on the moon. 

We have the most powerful economy in the history of the world because we have largely embraced a free market system. The average American enjoys luxuries the richest people living 200 years ago could scarcely have dreamed of; such as air conditioning, air travel & cell phones.

We have the best & most competitive athletes in the world. We have collected more than twice as many Olympic medals as the next-closest competing country, the Soviet Union. Which actually doesn’t even exist anymore. American football is much more exciting than soccer. 

We have built the strongest military in the history of the world; and, played pivotal roles in the victories of World War I, World War II and the Cold War. Our B-2 bombers can take off from Missouri, successfully bomb a buried Iranian nuclear site thousands of miles away on the other side of the world and then return home without ever having to land once. Hundreds of thousands of men and women have given their lives in service to this country for the freedoms and prosperity we enjoy today. 

Regardless, leftist cynics never fail in their constant attempts to disparage America & her greatness. First, they insist on always defining America by her faults instead of her strengths or accomplishments. Note well how they never apply that same standard to their heroes. In 1969, the late Senator Ted Kennedy drove off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island resulting in the death of his passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne. Yet, the Left spent the next 40 years celebrating him anyway. 

The hypocrisy of the Left demonstrates how they truly believe countries and their people should be defined by their flaws and mistakes. They expect those who love America and her heroes should judge the country as harshly as they do.

The Left is also obsessed with severing the connection between us and our marvelous history. They tear down, vandalize and destroy monuments to our great American heroes like Thomas Jefferson and Christopher Columbus. They take it upon themselves to rename our national holidays. They teach our children that America’s success only comes at the cost of oppressing and exploiting others; and in some strange way, we should all feel guilty for that. 

If you’re an American, you aren’t just an individual. You’re a member of a very special a family, which is an important part of a community, which is part of a state, which is part of this country. The celebration of all the things which make your country important and great should be both good and natural; and should be very easy to do when it’s the greatest country in the history of the world. ✪
