The Oldsmobile Toronado 1966-1992

✪ One of the most significant and audacious American automobiles of the postwar era was the Oldsmobile Toronado. Introduced for the 1966 model year, the Toronado was the first American front-wheel-drive car since the Cord 810/812 of 1936-1937, a gap of nearly three decades. More than just a technical curiosity, the Toronado was a genuine design sensation that combined bold styling with genuinely innovative engineering.
It won Motor Trend‘s Car of the Year in its debut season, drew enormous crowds at dealerships, and established Oldsmobile as GM‘s engineering laboratory. This is the story of a car that dared to be different in an era when American automakers rarely took risks. To understand why Oldsmobile built the Toronado, you need to appreciate the division’s history within General Motors.
Founded in 1897 by Ransom Eli Olds, Oldsmobile was the oldest surviving American automobile brand when the Toronado was conceived, and throughout its history the division had been positioned as GM‘s engineering innovator. Oldsmobile‘s credentials were genuine: the division had introduced the first fully automatic transmission in a mass-produced American car, the Hydra-Matic, in 1940, and in 1949 launched the high-compression overhead valve Rocket V8 that established the template for the muscle car era.
By the early 1960s, chief engineer Harold Metzel and his team were studying front-wheel drive as the next major advancement. The technology offered real advantages: better traction in poor weather, more interior space by eliminating the driveshaft tunnel, and a lower floor. European manufacturers like Citroën had used front-wheel drive successfully for decades, but no one had successfully packaged a full-size American V8 with an automatic transmission in a front-drive layout. Oldsmobile‘s engineers set out to be the first.

The engineering challenge was formidable. Conventional front-drive layouts placed the transmission alongside the engine, creating a very wide powertrain that was impossible to package within acceptable dimensions with a full-size V8. Oldsmobile‘s solution was genuinely ingenious. Rather than placing the transmission beside the engine, engineers mounted the Turbo Hydra-Matic 425 automatic transmission behind the engine and connected the two with a Morse Hy-Vo silent chain drive, calling it the UPP or Unitized Power Package.
This chain, running on sprockets, transferred power from the engine’s crankshaft back to the transmission input, then forward again to the differential and front wheels. The arrangement kept the overall powertrain width manageable while retaining a conventional longitudinal engine orientation. The Morse chain was critical. It needed to transfer up to 475 lb-ft of torque reliably for hundreds of thousands of miles, operating in an oil bath within the powertrain casing. The final design used a 2-inch wide chain running on 7.5-inch diameter sprockets, proven capable of handling the torque loads without stretching or breaking.
The front-drive layout also required constant velocity joints to transmit power to the front wheels through the steering angles. These tripod-type CV joints were adapted from European designs but needed to be substantially stronger to handle V8 power. That power came from Oldsmobile‘s 425 cubic inch (6,965 cc) Super Rocket V8, featuring a 4.125-inch bore and 3.975-inch stroke with a 10.5:1 compression ratio that demanded premium fuel. A single Rochester four-barrel carburetor fed the engine. Output was a robust 385 HP at 4,800 RPM and 475 lb-ft of torque at 3,200 RPM, among the most powerful figures available in an American production car in 1966.
For 1968, the 425 was replaced by a new 455 cubic inch (7,456 cc) unit with a longer 4.250-inch stroke, producing 375 HP at 4,600 RPM and a massive 510 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 RPM, with a W-45 option package boosting output to 400 HP.
While Oldsmobile‘s engineers solved the mechanical challenges, GM design chief Bill Mitchell assigned stylist David North to create bodywork worthy of the technical achievement. The result was one of the most dramatic American automobiles of the decade.
The Toronado‘s most distinctive feature was its front end, where hidden headlights sat behind vacuum-operated doors in the grille opening, a feature reminiscent of the Cord 810‘s retractable units. When activated, the doors swung open to reveal the headlights, an effect that never failed to draw attention. The roofline was a fastback design with a steeply raked rear window flowing into a truncated tail. The C-pillar featured a dramatic flying buttress design that framed the rear window and added visual mass to the rear quarters, a genuinely novel treatment in American design that was widely copied by competitors.
Overall dimensions were substantial: 211 inches in length on a 119-inch wheelbase, 78.5 inches wide, and just 52.8 inches tall, an exceptionally low profile made possible by the front-drive layout. The flat floor, free of any driveshaft tunnel, provided genuinely spacious accommodation across the bench seat.
The Toronado‘s performance was impressive for a large luxury car. Contemporary road tests recorded 0-60 MPH times of 8.5 seconds, with the quarter mile dispatched in approximately 16.0 seconds at 87 MPH. Top speed was around 135 MPH. Motor Trend praised the car’s acceleration as effortless, the massive torque of the 425 cubic inch engine pulling strongly from low RPM with no need for downshifting in normal driving. Handling surprised automotive journalists who expected a heavy front-drive V8 car to be a handful.
The Toronado did understeer when pushed hard, but the degree was controllable and predictable. Torque steer was present under full-throttle acceleration but manageable. The independent front suspension used torsion bars rather than coil springs, providing a wide range of adjustment and consistent ride height. Where the Toronado genuinely excelled was in poor weather.
The combination of front-wheel drive and engine weight over the driven wheels gave the car traction that rear-drive contemporaries simply couldn’t match, a real-world advantage that resonated strongly with buyers in the Snow Belt states. Braking was provided by front discs measuring 11.0 inches in diameter and rear drums, with power assist standard. Contemporary testers reported 60-0 MPH stopping distances of around 145 feet, competitive with luxury cars of the era.
First Generation 1966-1970

The Toronado‘s market reception exceeded Oldsmobile‘s expectations. For the 1966 model year, Oldsmobile produced 40,963 Toronados, a remarkable figure for a new model with an unproven drivetrain. The car attracted buyers who appreciated both its technical innovation and its bold styling. Oldsmobile dealerships reported that the Toronado was bringing in customers who had never considered an Oldsmobile before. Sales remained strong through the first generation. The 1967 model year saw 21,790 units produced, a decline from the debut year’s exceptional figure but still healthy for a personal luxury car. For 1968, production rebounded to 26,454 as the new 455 cubic inch engine brought additional performance, and styling updates freshened the appearance.

The 1969 and 1970 models received more significant styling updates. The hidden headlights were deleted in favor of exposed units, a controversial decision that many felt diminished the car’s distinctive appearance. The grille was redesigned with a more conventional look, and the rear styling was updated with new taillights and trim. These changes made the Toronado look more like a conventional personal luxury car and less like the bold statement the original had made.
The primary competitors throughout the first generation were the Ford Thunderbird and the Cadillac Eldorado, introduced for 1967 using a modified version of the Toronado‘s own chain-drive system, a clear acknowledgment by GM‘s premium division that Oldsmobile had been onto something important.

A special option code W-34 (Toronado GT) was available on the 1968-70 models, including a cold air induction system, a performance camshaft and a GT transmission calibrated for quick and firm upshifts and better torque multiplication at 5 MPH. Dual exhausts with bumper cutouts that were similar to the 1966-67 model years came with the package. The standard Toronado also had dual exhausts, but they ran into a single muffler and tailpipe. Special GT badging was only available for 1970. The Toronado GT hit 60 MPH in 7.5 seconds and ran the quarter-mile in 15.7 seconds at 89.8 MPH.

Throughout the first generation, the Toronado competed primarily against the Ford Thunderbird and the newly introduced Cadillac Eldorado. The Eldorado‘s adoption of front-wheel drive for 1967 was both a vindication of Oldsmobile‘s engineering and a complication for the Toronado‘s market positioning. The Eldorado used a modified version of the Toronado‘s drivetrain, with the same chain-drive concept adapted to fit Cadillac‘s 429 cubic inch V8 initially, later replaced by the massive 500 cubic inch engine for 1970. The Thunderbird had abandoned its two-seat sports car roots for a four-seat personal luxury formula in 1958, and by the mid-1960s it was a comfortable but conventional front-engine, rear-drive car.
Second Generation 1971-1978

The second-generation Toronado, introduced for 1971, was a substantially different car from the original. It was larger, heavier, and more luxurious, reflecting the personal luxury car trend of the early 1970s. Wheelbase grew to 122 inches, overall length increased to 219.7 inches, and curb weight ballooned to approximately 4,600 pounds.
The second generation was unambiguously a luxury cruiser rather than the bold sporting statement the original had made. The 455 cubic inch V8 continued as the sole engine option, though output began declining as emissions equipment was added. The 1971 Toronado produced 350 HP at 4,400 RPM with a 8.5:1 compression ratio, down from the previous year’s figures as GM reduced compression ratios across its lineup to accommodate lower-octane unleaded fuel.
By 1975, output had dropped further to 215 HP as catalytic converters and additional emissions controls took their toll. Styling for the second generation was more conservative than the original. The distinctive flying buttress C-pillar was retained but softened, and the overall appearance was more rounded and luxurious. The interior was lavishly appointed with standard equipment that would have been optional on the first-generation car. The focus had shifted decisively from technical innovation to luxury appointments.

The 1973 oil crisis hit the second-generation Toronado hard. The car’s 455 cubic inch engine consumed fuel at a rate that seemed irresponsible in the new era of fuel conservation. Sales dropped sharply, from 48,900 in 1973 to just 27,000 in 1974. Oldsmobile responded by making the Toronado more efficient, but the fundamental problem of a large front-drive car with a massive V8 engine was difficult to overcome.

For 1974, Oldsmobile offered a Toronado with a novel onboard diagnostic system called MISAR, or Microprocessed Sensing and Automatic Regulation. This early electronic ignition control module used a computer to optimize spark timing based on engine speed and load. MISAR was one of the first automotive applications of microprocessor technology and previewed the engine management systems that would become universal in subsequent decades.
Third Generation 1979-1985

GM‘s corporate downsizing program reached the Toronado for the 1979 model year, producing a car that was substantially smaller and lighter than its predecessor. Wheelbase shrank to 114 inches, overall length dropped to 205.7 inches, and curb weight fell by approximately 900 pounds to around 3,700 pounds. This dramatic reduction transformed the Toronado‘s character, making it more nimble and fuel efficient.
The 455 cubic inch engine was gone, replaced initially by a 403 cubic inch (6,604 cc) V8 producing 185 HP, then by a 307 cubic inch (5,031 cc) V8 making 140 HP, and even the trouble-prone Oldsmobile 350 cubic inch diesel V8 producing a paltry 105 HP. These engines were adequate for the lighter third-generation car but lacked the muscular character of the original 425 and early 455 cubic inch units.
The diesel option introduced across Oldsmobile’s lineup proved particularly troublesome, with reliability issues that damaged their reputation. Styling for the third generation was clean and modern, if less dramatic than the original. The front end featured a conventional grille with exposed headlights, and the roofline was a notchback rather than the fastback of the first generation. The car looked like a handsome personal luxury coupe, which it was, but it lacked the visual impact that had made the 1966 original so memorable.
Sales of the downsized Toronado were respectable. The 1979 model year saw 50,057 units produced, the highest single-year total in the car’s history, reflecting public enthusiasm for the smaller, more fuel-efficient package. The improved fuel economy was a genuine selling point in the post-oil-crisis environment, and the Toronado‘s front-drive traction remained a compelling advantage in northern markets.
Fourth Generation 1986-1992

The fourth and final generation Toronado, introduced for the 1986 model year, represented a thorough modernization. Built on GM‘s new E-body platform shared with the Cadillac Eldorado and Buick Riviera, the fourth-generation Toronado was smaller still, with a 108-inch wheelbase and overall length of 187.2 inches. It was now a mid-size personal luxury coupe rather than the full-size car the original had been.
Engine options for the fourth generation were a 3.8-liter (231 cubic inch) V6 producing 140 HP and a 5.0-liter (307 cubic inch) V8 making 140 HP as well. Neither engine was particularly exciting, and neither provided performance approaching anywhere near the original Toronado‘s capabilities. The front-drive layout was now conventional rather than revolutionary, as numerous manufacturers had adopted the configuration in the intervening two decades. A 20th Anniversary Edition was available for 1986.

For 1987, Oldsmobile introduced the Toronado Troféo, a sport-tuned version with firmer suspension, distinctive wheels, and a revised interior including leather seats. The Troféo also offered an optional heads-up display that projected speed and other information onto the windshield, allowing drivers to read vital data without looking down. This technology, now common in premium vehicles, was genuinely advanced for the late ’80s. In 1992, GM and Avis Rent a Car pilot tested a GPS navigation system in select Troféo models equipped with a touchscreen at the Orlando International Airport in Florida. The system included a built-in cellular phone and computer-synthesized voice guidance system, features we take for granted today.
The fourth-generation Toronado never recaptured the excitement of the original. Sales declined steadily through its production run, and Oldsmobile discontinued the Toronado nameplate after the 1992 model year. Total production for the final generation was modest, with annual figures ranging from roughly 15,000 to 25,000 units. The market for large personal luxury coupes had fragmented, with Japanese competitors offering quality and reliability that domestic manufacturers struggled to match.

The Oldsmobile Toronado‘s historical significance far exceeds its commercial success. The original 1966 model demonstrated that front-wheel drive could work in a full-size American car with a powerful V8 engine, paving the way for the technology’s eventual adoption across the industry. Today the majority of passenger cars sold in the United States use front-wheel drive, a configuration essentially unproven in American production cars before the Toronado. The chain-drive solution influenced subsequent front-drive designs, and the Cadillac Eldorado‘s adoption of the same system validated the approach.
The original Toronado‘s styling was equally influential. The flying buttress C-pillar appeared on numerous GM and Ford products through the late 1960s and early 1970s. The hidden headlights became a popular styling device. The low fastback roofline established proportions that competitors scrambled to emulate. Bill Mitchell’s team created a design vocabulary that shaped American personal luxury cars for a decade.

Among collectors, the first-generation Toronado commands the most interest. Excellent examples of 1966 and 1967 models with the original 385 HP engine and hidden headlights bring $25,000 to $45,000, with exceptional cars exceeding $60,000. Second and third generation cars are considerably less valuable, typically selling for $5,000 to $15,000 in good condition. Fourth generation cars remain affordable at under $10,000 for presentable examples. The Toronado-Riviera-Eldorado Association serves owners of all three related GM E-body cars, providing technical support and parts sourcing assistance. The Oldsmobile Toronado deserves to be remembered primarily for what it was in 1966: the boldest American car of its era. At a time when Detroit was content to refine existing formulas, Oldsmobile dared to ask whether front-wheel drive could work in a full-size American car. The answer, as we now know, was not just yes but inevitably yes.
The Toronado pointed the way toward the configuration that would dominate passenger car design for over half a century, and it did so wrapped in some of the most dramatic styling ever to emerge from a Detroit design studio. Few American cars have been more important or more beautiful than the original 1966 Toronado. ✪
