GREENLAND & “THE ART OF THE DEAL”

vvv

t was 1867 and journalists were merciless in criticizing U.S. Secretary of State William Seward; appointed to that position in 1861 by President Abraham Lincoln and serving under President Andrew Johnson until 1869.

It was that year Seward negotiated the purchase from Russia of what many Americans saw to be a vast wasteland, Alaska. It was bought for $7.2 million—the equivalent of $0.02 per acre. Critics gave the acquisition various names such as “Seward’s Folly, Seward’s Icebox,” and the “Polar Bear Garden.”

Seward’s critics mocked what they felt was the absurdity of buying Alaska, perceived as having little of value. Russia was eager to sell it as Alaska had become an economic liability. Not only were there great costs and logistical difficulties associated with supplying the territory, but Russia was struggling at that time with the enormous debt it had incurred from the disastrous Crimean War (1853–1856).

Over a century and a half later, we know the purchase of Alaska was no folly. Not only did the territory prove to be rich in oil, gold, and other resources, but it denied the Soviet Union prime real estate from which it could have seriously threatened the U.S. during the Cold War.

President Donald Trump initially made headlines by announcing in 2019 his intent to buy Greenland, issuing more serious claims this year. His critics mock him today in similar fashion as they did Seward.

Today, Greenland remains part of the Kingdom of Denmark. At one time, Denmark and Norway were unified, colonizing Greenland in the 1700s. When that union ended in 1814, Greenland became a Danish colony. Although Trump has suggested there are no written documents underscoring this, in 1916, the U.S. recognized Danish sovereignty over it.

During World War II, after Nazi Germany occupied Denmark, the U.S. invaded the island, establishing military bases there and maintaining a presence ever since. A 1951 U.S.-Denmark defense agreement granted the U.S. a significant role in Greenland’s defense, with the island formally integrated into Denmark in 1953 to end its colonial status. In 1979, Denmark granted Greenland home rule, although the former remains responsible for the latter’s defense and foreign policy.

What is Trump’s rationale for acquiring Greenland now? While 1867 America failed to recognize the strategic importance of Alaska, the strategic importance of Greenland today should be obvious.

As Trump explains, Greenland’s purchase is imperative to America’s future national security interests. Its strategic geographic position alone, controlling access to the Arctic, is of value, especially as the Arctic experiences a meltdown. It is such melting that has gained the attention of both Russia and China as they seek to spread their wings in the region to exploit its resources. Russia now has six army bases, ten radar stations, fourteen airfields, and sixteen deep-water ports there.

Just like Alaska has proven to be rich in rare earth elements (REEs), undoubtedly so too will the newly exposed Arctic lands prove to be. This is an especially important national security interest at a time the current leading exporter of rare Earth minerals—China—is limiting world access to these minerals, which are absolutely critical to the development of American technology and weaponry.

Additionally, Greenland can play an important role in providing an extended northeastern arch to the Golden Dome missile defense system Trump envisions for future America. It is a system similar to the current Iron Dome, which has successfully protected Israel from short-range rockets and artillery attacks; a system developed jointly by the Jewish state with U.S. assistance.

America’s northernmost military base, Pituffik Space Base, is located in Greenland where the base would be part of the Golden Dome. It is already proving vital for its early warning missile system and its space surveillance capability.

Trump is very concerned that Denmark and NATO are failing adequately to protect Greenland against the ever-increasing Russian and Chinese threats.

There are a few ways America can gain control over the world’s largest island. While military force is an option, it would be very damaging to America’s image as well as to the NATO alliance; an action to which all member nations would object. This is undoubtedly why Trump recently backpedalled on this option.

Precedents for U.S. Military action to secure semiautonomous states do exist, evidenced by what we did in 1893 in Hawaii, and in 1899 in the Philippines. However, a preferred option would be obtaining peaceful acquisition or control.

This could include first making a deal with Denmark and Greenland to purchase it, which probably would be the easier part. However, under our Constitution, as a treaty, the purchase would then require approval receiving a Senate supermajority of 67 votes. With a strong anti-Trump element in the Senate, despite the fact U.S. national security is at stake, when it comes to that versus undermining Trump, every Democrat in the Senate, save perhaps Senator John Fetterman (D-Penn), would probably prefer to do the latter.

Another alternative is for Greenland to become a U.S. territory; as are the Virgin Islands. Or a freely associated state by virtue of a compact with the U.S. as has been done with Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, and Palau. While these three have been granted substantial economic aid, the U.S. is responsible for their security and defense. This is usually done by means of a treaty which again, would require a supermajority, but might possibly be done as an act of Congress. A precedent exists for moving a treaty forward by not labelling it as one: Barack Obama, in passing the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action with Iran as an executive agreement, did just that.

Should Greenland be incorporated into the U.S., it would be the largest territorial expansion in our history as it is twice as big as Alaska.

Due to European opposition to a Greenland purchase, Trump threatened to impose a new 10% tariff effective February 1, “on any and all goods” sent to the U.S. by those countries opposing the acquisition, with it to increase to 25% by June 1 absent any deal.

However, it would appear now, in the wake of an announcement Trump just made, the Greenland acquisition may all have been a ploy by which the president sought to achieve his real goal, known only to him and his close associates.

In negotiating the “art of the deal” with his European opponents, Trump reports he will not now implement the tariffs, as NATO has agreed to the “framework” of an arrangement that will provide security for the Arctic region.

It took years for Americans to realize Seward’s Folly was not one. It has taken us a much shorter time to realize Trump’s desire to acquire Greenland was probably just a folly he imposed upon our European allies to get them to agree to what is in America’s, as well as their own, interests, i.e., bringing Western security to the Arctic. ✪

TRUMP OWNED DAVOS

uropean leaders worked themselves up into full-blown hysteria before President Trump spoke to the World Economic Forum this week with wild claims that Trump planned a U.S. invasion of Greenland which would completely destroy the NATO alliance and the rules-based international order. A couple of dozen European troops were hurriedly sent to Greenland. French President Macron called for an emergency G7 summit. European leaders also discussed implementing a “bazooka” trade retaliation against the United States.

However, when Trump spoke at the Davos Summit on Wednesday, these hair-on-fire claims melted away in the face of his masterful speech, which laid out in depth his successful record of promoting global security and ending wars. The President also turned the tables on European leaders by challenging them over policies that have endangered their security and the welfare of their citizens.

Trump mocked Europe’s reliance on windmills and green energy, noting that electricity prices have soared by 139% in some European countries, and criticized the UK for energy policies that make it impossible to drill for oil in the North Sea.

Trump also contrasted Europe’s poor economic performance with the U.S. “economic miracle” and said European leaders should end radical policies that are dragging down their economies and instead emulate American policies. Trump was referring to recent figures showing significantly stronger U.S. economic growth: U.S. real GDP growth in Q3 2025 was 4.4%, compared to a paltry 0.4% for the European Union.

Further demonstrating the European claims about the U.S. and Greenland were overblown, the President did not mention Greenland until halfway through his speech. When he did, Trump said he did not plan to use force to acquire Greenland and surprised the summit by announcing that the U.S. had worked out a framework agreement with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to address U.S. security concerns about Greenland.

Many European leaders were probably forced to rewrite their Davos speeches after Trump’s speech swept away their dire warnings and put them on the defensive. However, even though the Greenland issue was no longer a so-called crisis after the president’s speech, EU leaders still held an “emergency” summit on it in Brussels on Thursday. (The emergency G7 summit in Paris proposed by Macron apparently did not occur because Trump refused to attend.)

Trump followed up his epic Davos speech by chairing an historic signing ceremony for the Board of Peace which will oversee his 20-point peace plan to end the Israeli-Hamas War. The Board is part of Trump’s ambitious plan to end the war. Special Envoy Jared Kushner briefed on the “master plan” of the next stage of the peace plan, which will spend $25 billion to rebuild Gaza in phases. Many U.S. allies attended the launch of the Board of Peace, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE, Jordan, Bahrain, Morocco, Hungary, Indonesia, and Turkey.

However, no major European leader attended the Board of Peace meeting. French President Macron complained that the board appears to be replacing the United Nations. UK Prime Minister Starmer objected that Russian President Putin has been invited to join the board. Some European leaders criticized the Board because it will be headed by President Trump and controlled by the United States. A few probably did not attend to snub the U.S. President.

There is some truth to be found in European criticisms of the Board of Peace. It was created to go around the UN, but the reason is to bypass its decades of hostility toward Israel and inefficiency. Many European leaders also prefer the Gaza Peace Plan be controlled by the UN, where it would be easier for them to change it in such a way as to orient it toward the rapid creation of a Palestinian state. A bad idea which the U.S. and Israel will not support.

Trump did a victory lap in his speech to the Board of Peace ceremony when he said, “We have peace in the Middle East. Nobody thought that was possible.” He didn’t deny the Board of Peace is designed to circumvent United Nations influence. Although Trump criticized the UN’s underperformance, he also acknowledged its potential and said that once the Board is fully formed, it will work in conjunction with the United Nations. Trump ignored the European no-shows, noting that 59 nations had already signed up to the Board of Peace in principle.

It was quite a week for our 47th President at the Davos Summit; long known as a gathering place for globalist leaders and leftist ideology. He quickly discredited European paranoia about his Greenland policy and announced a plan for Greenland security negotiated by the NATO Secretary General. He gave a brutally honest assessment of failed European domestic, security, and economic policies which are destroying their countries. Trump discussed his successful peace efforts to resolve global conflicts which no other leaders (or the United Nations) had managed to resolve. And President Trump initiated the next stage in his ambitious 20-point peace plan to end the Israel-Gaza War.

Put simply, President Trump owned Davos. ✪

▶️ SPEAKER JOHNSON ENDORSES FEDERAL JUDGE IMPEACHMENTS

SPEAKER JOHNSON ENDORSES FEDERAL JUDGE IMPEACHMENTS

rrr

ouse Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said on Jan. 21 he would support articles of impeachment against some Federal judges after congressional Republicans floated the prospect last year.

During a press conference, a reporter asked Johnson about Senate Republicans suggesting the House bring articles of impeachment against several judges. Multiple Republicans have signaled they want to impeach two U.S. district judges, James Boasberg and Deborah Boardman.

“I’m for it,” Johnson said during the Wednesday news conference alongside other Republican House members. “Judge Boasberg is one who’s been mentioned.”

“Impeachment, as we have discussed all together many, many times, is an extreme measure. But extreme times call for extreme measures. And I think some of these judges have gotten so far outside the bounds of where they’re supposed to operate, it would not be, in my view, a bad thing for Congress to lay down the law, so to speak, and to make an example of some of these egregious abuses,” the House speaker said, without naming other judges.

Speaker Johnson did not offer a timeline on when impeachment articles could be introduced. “We’ll see where it goes,” he said.

The House requires a simple majority (51 votes) to impeach an official such as a judge, but the bar is much higher in the Senate. A two-thirds majority in the upper chamber is needed in order to convict and remove an official if and after a House impeachment passes.

Rep. Brandon Gill (R-Texas) in March introduced articles of impeachment against Boasberg following court decisions which barred Trump from using the Alien Enemies Act to deport Venezuelan illegal immigrant gang members.

The lawmaker also moved to introduce articles to impeach Boasberg in November over a separate decision related to the Arctic Frost investigation.

In October, Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) introduced an impeachment resolution targeting Boardman for a sentencing decision that she made for a man accused of plotting to kill Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. The man, Nicholas Roske, was sentenced to 8 years in prison; while prosecutors had sought upwards of 30 years of imprisonment.

The text of the resolution states that Boardman should be impeached for handing down an “indefensibly light sentence” to Roske, who prosecutors had said had traveled to Kavanaugh’s home in June 2022 with a plan to kill the justice before he called the authorities on himself.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), the chair of the Commerce Committee, said in a Senate hearing earlier this month that he also wants to see impeachment proceedings against Boardman and Boasberg, saying that “both … meet the standard for impeachment and for conviction and removal of office.”

However, Democrats in Congress say any impeachment efforts are misguided and pointless. Among them is Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), who this week said in a statement that a call to impeach Boardman over the Roske sentencing “contradicts basic law and history.”

In a January 20 news release from his office, Whitehouse, the ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Courts Subcommittee, said, “a notice of appeal has been filed regarding that sentencing, so it remains an active judicial proceeding, not a proper subject of partisan legislative pressure.”

Whitehouse characterized impeachment suggestions against Boasberg as part of an unjust “barrage of threats by the MAGA movement and the Trump administration” which “appear intended to intimidate” the judge. ✪

▶️ WHEN CANADA MAKES NICE WITH CHINESE COMMUNISTS

WHEN CANADA MAKES NICE WITH CHINESE COMMUNISTS

ark Carney and his Liberal Government sold Canada out to the Chinese communists with their recent trade deal.  Highlights include opening the door to China’s state owned media, a promise of uranium exports, reducing tariffs on Chinese E.V.s to 6.1%, down from 100%, and initially allowing 49,000 of them into Canada per annum, with year-by-year increases.  In return, China pledges to reduce duties on Canadian canola from 85% to 6.1% effective March 1 and have “anti-discrimination” tariffs removed from seafood and peas. And all of this while Carney speaks glowingly of a “strategic partnership” with Beijing and “a new world order.”

What’s lost in this whole mess is the fact China spies on us, & interfered in our 2019 and 2021 elections (What about the one in 2025? Has anyone bothered to ask that question?) How about the illegal police stations the CCP operated on our soil to harass their diaspora. And let’s not forget the fentanyl China is also smuggling into Canada.

In addition, moving deeper into China’s socioeconomic orbit will further undermine Canada’s relations with traditional allies in NATO and the Five Eyes, who will cease to trust us, and who can blame them? National intelligence will leak like a sieve.

This is all an unmitigated disaster, with consequences for the Canadian economy and freedoms; which will invariably be compromised once we find ourselves at the mercy of a totalitarian, communist regime.

Instead of China, Canada should be looking to the U.K., Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, and India for increased economic cooperation.  Also, Canada now does approximately 80% of our trade with the United States, much of which may now be permanently jeopardized.

It’s unbelievable how Carney and his ilk could think this communist superpower can be trusted in spite of all the evidence to the contrary.  He should talk to the people in Hong Kong; or for that matter, the Ugyhurs, Tibetans, and Taiwanese. And then there are the two Michaels: Kovrig (a diplomat) and Spavor (an entrepreneur and consultant), who were based in China when they were apprehended by Chinese authorities and imprisoned for approximately one thousand days in retaliation for Canada appropriately detaining Meng Wanzhou, a Chinese Huawei executive, in Vancouver, British Columbia at the behest of the United States, where she was wanted for fraud and conspiracy to commit fraud.

Indeed, Michael Kovrig has been nothing if not outspoken in his warnings about becoming too close to the CCP.  Our “experts” must think he has nothing to contribute to the “conversation.” Or maybe it’s the “dialogue.” I really must get up to speed on the woke Liberal Party lingo. “Dialogue” seems to be one of their favorite words.

Trade with China will never be fair. China’s cheap, inferior (and subsidized) products, manufactured by exploited, underpaid workers and slave labor (Ugyhurs), will be dumped into the Canadian market to specifically undercut domestic competitors.  Chinese E.V.s, anyone? Won’t those be wonderful on the prairies when the temperature drops to forty below!

Bottom line: the Chinese communists are not our friends, but their increased influence will ultimately condemn Canada to developing a socioeconomic climate not unlike theirs. ✪

▶️ IRAN THREATENS WORLDWIDE JIHAD IF AYATOLLAH IS KILLED

IRAN THREATENS WORLDWIDE JIHAD IF AYATOLLAH IS KILLED

fff

earful of a direct American attack on the Ayatollah Khamenei, the Iranian Government has just issued a warning to Washington: if you attack our beloved Supreme Leader, this will constitute a declaration of war on all of the world’s Muslims; and they will rise up as one and unleash a jihad which will destroy you.

At least the Iranians have made clear “jihad” does not mean a “struggle within oneself to be a good person,” as Muslim apologists want us all to believe. Its primary meaning is violence against the Infidels in order to force them to submit. It means striking non-Muslims; not just Americans or Israelis who, after all, are “the most vile of created beings.” (Qur’an 98:6)

Algemeiner reported “Iranian lawmakers on Tuesday warned that any attack on Iran’s so-called ‘supreme leader,’ Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, would lead to a declaration of ‘jihad,’ or holy war, and a “violent global response from the Islamic world.”

The Islamic Republic’s Parliamentary National Security Committee said “any attack on the Supreme Leader is a declaration of war on the entire Islamic world.” The committee added any attack would result in “the issuance of a jihad decree by Islamic scholars and the response of Islam’s soldiers in all parts of the world.”

Not to be outdone, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said that “any aggression against the supreme leader of our country is tantamount to all-out war against the Iranian nation.” Regarding the aggression of the Islamic Republic’s minions against the pro-freedom protesters in Iran, Pezeshkian had nothing to say, but Algemeiner reported: “Iranian officials have put the death toll at 5,000 while some reports indicate the figure could be much higher. The Sunday Times, for example, obtained a new report from doctors on the ground, which states that at least 16,500 protesters have died and 330,000 have been injured.”

Whom should we believe regarding the real numbers of people killed and wounded? Those who have done the killing and wounding; and also consistently underestimate those numbers; or the doctors inside the Islamic Republic of Iran who have seen & treated the wounded and counted the dead? Particularly startling is the doctors’ report 330,000 Iranians were injured during the recent protests. If accurate, that’s a staggering number resulting in those people and their relatives (a few million people) — will now be consumed with hatred toward the regime.

Do the Iranians really believe the entire Muslim world will unleash a jihad against the Americans if they attack their Supreme Leader? The response to the Iranians boast has thus far been tepid. Pakistan’s defense minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif has said: “We will stand firmly with Iran in all conditions.” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated: “I am confident with wisdom, my Iranian brothers and sisters will overcome the treacherous Israeli-backed sedition that targeted the country’s social peace and stability.” However, he did not say anything specific about sending troops against the United States.

And have the Iranians already forgotten about how the Sunni Muslims, who make up 85 to 90% of the world’s Muslims, despise the Shi’a, with some extremist Sunnis even denying Shi’a can even be considered Muslims? Have they forgotten the recent attacks on Shi’a by the Sunnis in Pakistan, including the bombing of Shi’a mosques and madrasas? Or have they forgotten about the Sunni terrorist group Sipah-e-Sahaba, whose sole reason to exist is to attack the Shia in Pakistan? Have attacks by the extreme Sunnis in Afghanistan known as the Taliban, who massacred Shi’a in the city of Mazar-e-Sharif in 1991, and who have continued to attack the Shi’a ever since, especially those belonging to the Hazara ethnic group, not left an impression on the Iranians?

Far from the Muslim world rising up against America should it target the Supreme Iranian Leader, there will be a delirium of joy across Iran; and a deep satisfaction among the world’s Sunnis. The Iranian regime is now whistling in the dark, hoping to scare the Americans with empty threats about “all Muslims” rising up against them. The truth is very few Sunnis will shed a single tear for the Iranian Supreme Leader, whenever he meets the end he so richly deserves. ✪

▶️ RANKED CHOICE VOTING FAILURES ACCUMULATE

RANKED CHOICE VOTING FAILURES ACCUMULATE

jjj

wo years ago, supporters claimed Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) was was “the fastest-growing voting reform in the nation.” Their “hot reform” was used in just two states and a few isolated localities but was headed onto the voter ballot as initiatives in a half dozen states. Instead of winning and expanding, Ranked Choice Voting has lost almost everywhere and is now banned in many states. And it just lost its biggest fight of 2026.

At one time, groups pushing Ranked Choice Voting racked up wins practically unopposed. They spent vast resources on deceptive ad campaigns, convincing voters to pass Ranked Choice Voting in Maine in 2016 and Alaska in 2020; as well as in various cities and counties. However more recently, the movement has hit a brick wall and lost all momentum.

Ranked Choice Voting fortunes took a turn for the worst in 2024 when all six statewide ballot measures in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, and Oregon failed. Their inability to win even in Blue states was indeed a very bad indicator for a movement bankrolled by left-leaning billionaires. Fewer local & municipal ballot measures also failed to advance.

in addition, six more states banned Ranked Choice Voting outright in 2025; bringing the total number of states which have outlawed the system to seventeen with more expected to join the list. Legislators in Ohio and Michigan are considering Bills banning Ranked Choice Voting have already passed one chamber in both Ohio and Michigan. Another new bill was also introduced last month in Indiana..

However, 2024 wasn’t a complete bust for Ranked Choice Voting. Advocates still eked out a narrow win in Alaska by defeating a repeal measure on the ballot by a margin of only 743 votes (after weeks of counting). A new repeal campaign is now collecting signatures for yet another vote, putting pressure on the pro-RCV movement and forcing donors to shell out even more money to defend their floundering election schemes.

Ranked Choice Voting had one other win when Washington, D.C. voters adopted it as part of an open primary system. Even Mayor Muriel Bowser and the local Democrat Party were opposed because the rollout of Ranked Choice Voting has been far less than stellar. The system continues to struggle with delayed funding and opposition in the DC city council.

Despite all this, Ranked Choice Voting advocates have set their sights on Michigan by launching a campaign last year to put a state constitutional amendment on the ballot in November 2026. Winning a large, swing state like Michigan would provide a significant boost for the flailing Ranked Choice Voting election reform movement. However, Ranked Choice Voting in Michigan was forced to end its 2026 ballot effort before the year even began.

The Ranked Choice Voting Michigan campaign struggled for months to collect enough signatures to qualify for the November ballot. Yet, Campaign Director Joe Spaulding admitted his proposal had only a 40% chance of making the initiative ballot. Even that turned out to be overly optimistic when the campaign ended up being about 200,000 signatures short before finally being abandoned because the Michigan Association of County Clerks voted unanimously to condemn the Ranked Choice Voting proposal based on concerns about “complexity, disenfranchisement, and loss of voter trust.” The clerks who actually manage the state’s elections pointed out “Michigan voters already face some of the longest and most complex ballots in the nation.Ranked Choice Voting would have only made things worse, “adding inconsistency, voter confusion, and voter fatigue.”

However, despite a string of losses, Ranked Choice Voting isn’t completely dead yet. Left-wing donors & supporters continue to prop it up, and “election reform” groups like FairVote continue to promote it. What was once sold as a way to provide voters with more choices to improve election outcomes is now seen for what it really is: a poorly designed scheme which has failed everywhere it’s been tried. ✪
