Inflation Returns After July Lull: DOW Plunges 1276
âȘ Consumer prices were up again in August. The Democrats’ Inflation Reduction Act is working like a charm. “This was a very disappointing report,” economists say of the latest Consumer Price Index numbers…
Consumer prices rose 0.1 percent in August, dashing many economistsâ hopes that lower energy prices would be enough to cool inflation.
The Consumer Price Index is now up 8.3 percent over the last 12 months, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Tuesday. Food, housing, and medical care continue to see the largest price increases of the CPI contributors. While the inflation rate is a notch lower than it was in June and July, it is still much higher than economists expected.
“We thought weâd see inflation start to come down, and instead what weâve seen is inflation really sort of entrenched,” Betsey Stevenson, professor of public policy and economics at the University of Michigan and a former member of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, told the Post. “If thereâs no real progress, then that says, âdoes the Fed need to take stronger action?â And if the Fed needs to take stronger action, what does that mean for the risk to peoplesâ livelihoods?”
Meanwhile, the White House on Tuesday invited folk musician James Taylor to help Democrats kick off a celebration of the âInflation Reduction Actâ on the South Lawn.
The aging folk musician performed the song âFire & Rainâ to the flood of Democrats on the South Lawn to celebrate Bidenâs multibillion-dollar green energy spending bill disguised as an âinflation reductionâ law.
âThis is a time when the world needs to cooperate more than ever before, perhaps more than anything since the Second World War the world needs to get together and respond to the climate crisis,â Taylor said after finishing his song.
As James Taylor played, the stock market continued falling, as the Dow Jones fell by more than 1,000 points in response to the data showing that inflation continued to rise in the month of August.
Biden thanked the folk singers for performing, claiming that James Taylorâs voice âheals our soul and unites the nation.â Taylor has not done a major political event since he first appeared in 2015 with then-Secretary of State John Kerry in Paris to sing âYouâve Got a Friend.â
While Americans battle 40-year high prices for everyday consumer products, the Biden Administration continues to throw billions of dollars toward climate and green energy initiatives; and President Joe Bidenâs Inflation Reduction Act will do little to actually reduce inflation, economists say.
The 10.6 percent decline in gasoline prices was not enough to offset rising prices of other consumer goods. “The food index increased 11.4 percent over the last year, the largest 12-month increase since the period ending May 1979,” the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported.
“This was a very disappointing report,” Laura Rosner-Warburton, senior economist at MacroPolicy Perspectives, told the Associated Press. “It raises the risk of higher interest rates and a hard landing for the economy.”
With midterm elections two months away, the economy is still the main issue on votersâ minds. Last month, A Pew Research Center poll showed that 77 percent of voters think the economy is “very important to their vote,” ranking it several points higher than crime and abortion. âȘ
