(SOURCE EDITOR’S NOTE: At this time there is no confirmation about where the “three people briefed on the matter” who spoke to the New York Times are employed – whether by the FBI, the US Attorney’s office in Florida, the USDOJ in Washington DC, on Capitol Hill, or whether they’re three individuals to whom the information was leaked. We have major concerns about supposedly serious newsrooms reporting about ongoing criminal probes in which no charges have been filed basing their story entirely upon information from anonymous sources whose connection to the investigation isn’t even revealed, and whether or not those anonymous sources were with the FBI the fact remains that someone involved in the probe – someone involved with the US government in some manner – purposely leaked this information for political gain. If we are ever to have confidence in the integrity of USDOJ and FBI investigations, these leaks need to be investigated and prosecuted.)
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) is now the subject of an inquiry by the US Department of Justice into whether he had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl and paid for her to travel with him. Three people who claimed to have been briefed on the matter told the New York Times that investigators are examining whether Gaetz may have violated federal sex trafficking laws.
For his part, Gaetz completely denies all the claims. He went on Tucker Carlson’s show last night to name a person of interest he alleges is now trying to extort $25 million dollars from him. Later, RedState confirmed Gaetz was telling the truth about his father wearing a wire to help the FBI to investigate the matter. Where the DOJ investigation on Gaetz stands now is anyone’s guess. Gaetz is certainly a highly visible and outspoken political figure; and, his defense is somewhat convoluted, but the fact this accusation was leaked to the News Media via “three people briefed” is yet another in a long series of black-eyes for the FBI.
This development should really bother everyone, regardless of their feelings towards Gaetz. How can the FBI be so careless as to leak something possibly this damaging or attack someone in such a blatantly political way. When facing such anonymous allegations or accusations, it’s virtually impossible for the accused to adequately respond to it in any effective manner to defend themselves. Last night, the reporter behind the Times story appeared on Rachel Maddow’s MSNBC show to counter Gaetz’s claim about the man he named, yet she offered no evidence of proof whatsoever. These kind of games are always rigged in such a way to make the targets helpless to defend themselves.
Notice how incredibly tight-lipped the FBI has been about the current Hunter Biden investigation into the myriad of other past transgressions by the president’s son. Their lips only seem to loosen for the Media when it’s Republicans who are in their cross-hairs, and that obvious bias should deeply concern everyone. It’s nothing but corruption pure & simple, and deserves whatever scorn & criticism it receives.
This entire fiasco just makes the FBI look incredibly stupid & inept. Does the FBI really require a multi-year investigation to prove whether Gaetz traveled or didn’t travel with a 17-year-old? Shouldn’t that be readily apparent or quickly disproven given the simplicity of the evidence they have already collected?
The FBI should have already determined by now whether or not Gaetz did anything wrong. They should either come out publicly and make formal charges; or, immediately slap down this entire report and close their investigation. Instead, by allowing it to continue to hang in the air, they are making themselves look as if they could actually be contributing players in this political drama. Who knows? Perhaps they are. It also reveals how incredibly sloppy and incompetent they can be in regards to managing important information in their investigations; which again, perhaps they are.
There needs to be major reforms within both the FBI and DOJ in regards to securing information about ongoing investigations in order to ensure fair & accurate outcomes. The constant stream of anti-Republican leaks going to news outlets like the New York Times and Washington Post is no fluke or random coincidence. It’s a highly unethical and wrong practice. However, don’t expect the current leadership to get to any of those necessary reforms any time soon. If anything, we can probably expect more of this kind of agency corruption to continue in the future and to always go one way in a single direction.✪
