e’ll take a National Sales Tax for several trillion dollars, Alex. Here are some suggestions in a Latenight With Lettermanesque fashion on how & why we should fund the Federal Government in less painful, confusing and complex ways. The Top 10 Reasons for a National Sales Tax:

10. Keep it simple, stupid! Flat tax or no, the biggest problem with an income tax is it’s based on income instead of consumption. The complexity and intrusion relates to allowing the Government to determine what qualifies as income in order to track it.

Uncle Sam gets to look in & snoop on hundreds of millions of private citizen taxpayers & businesses to make certain they’re not hiding income. For most taxpayers, their calculations are simpler if they elect to take no deductions or exemptions. However, the elimination of withholding would only increase the tendency for government to stick its nose into your business to make certain you’re not getting money under the table or hiding undeclared income. This is especially true for the self-employed.

Many employees collect income from multiple revenue sources, including savings and investments. The revenooers want to see all those records. In addition, such taxpayers also have to pay monthly to account for non-payroll sources. Who’s going to tell them how much? Certainly not the IRS, so citizens currently overpay just to play it safe.

What about the corporate income tax? Twenty-seven million private companies are forced each year to generate billions of complex calculations and pages of required record-keeping to satisfy the IRS requirements. Should businesses and corporations also pay a flat tax or a net sales tax?

Report one easy, simple number as a tax basis for companies: a percentage of sales. For consumers? The same fixed percentage for everyone on every purchase they make. No record-keeping, filing or extra costs for professional tax help service to navigate, fill out & file a hodgepodge of confusing tax forms. And no government spying into the private buying habits of individuals or companies except to confirm actual income from sales.

9.  Jobs, jobs, jobs. The second reason why taxing income (and payrolls) stinks is because by doing so, the government is actually penalizing labor and hiring; while at the same time paying people not to work. Absolute madness.

Leveraging a national sales tax to eliminate business as well individual income taxation would generate historic supply-side growth momentum and provide a financial incentive to reshore jobs and manufacturing.

8. Decoupling: Such a reshoring would also advance a long-needed decoupling from economic competitors or enemy states like China.

7. Transparency + skin in the game = fiscal discipline. Limit government spending to the amount of collected annual national sales tax revenues.

Even under a flat individual tax, the cost of government to every taxpayer may be different. The cost of every business tax calculation is subject to economic distortions/lost productivity and mind-boggling compliance and avoidance costs. Larger companies can afford to employ buildings full of accountants and lawyers to angle down their tax bills to zero.

With a uniform national sales tax, the amount of tax collected appears and is automatically documented on every sales receipt or invoice. Ideally, the political parties could compete with each other to drive down the national sales tax percentage rate spurring voters to demand more fiscal discipline from government. Skin in the game is an essential component to changing voter calculus regarding Big Government.

6. Disinflation. Flush out hidden costs and distortions of all the hidden costs of government thru transparency. A uniform application of a national sales tax would actually force the government to operate more honestly & efficiently.

5. True equity. The current income tax system penalizes profit & productivity. With a national sales tax, everyone pays the same percentage across the board whether they’re buying a soda or a yacht.

4. Entitlement bills are coming due soon. The pending future insolvency of Social Security and Medicare programs means their benefits will eventually have to be cut back as payroll and self-employment taxes are increased. Uncoupling these old-age benefit support programs from payroll taxes will open up the opportunity to reconsider investment privatization and incentivize individuals to save more for their futures.

3. Less debt. Limiting Government spending limited to a transparent amount of annual tax revenue will ultimately eliminate wasteful government spending & debt

2. Family formation. A national sales tax allows families to keep more of their own money and creates a more stable and predictable future people can better plan for. This is a critical factor if we are ever going to increase domestic fertility rates again.

1. More power, privacy and freedom for you the individual. Do you think the Federal Government is problematic now? Wait until it unleashes its full might as an increasingly tyrannical leadership to satiate its current reckless, spending habits.

While Big Tech, Big Business and Cancel Culture can all isolate or deprive you, Big Government with its unchecked ability to tax can seize all of your wealth and completely ruin your life.

If the tax returns of an ex-president are subject to endless scrutinizations by the IRS, then nobody is really safe under the current tax system. Nobody has any real privacy rights.

For these 10 reasons and hundreds more, it’s now time to abolish the IRS and instead implement a flat, national sales tax. It’s long past time. ✪
